TOEFL Tip: How to write a good essay in English
To practice writing an essay:
- Select a topic, narrow it down and identify your opinion about it.
- Then write an outline, which should include your purpose or title of the essay, your main points or sub-categories and your conclusion.
- In the first paragraph of your essay, have an introduction and a clear statement of your position or opinion, which is the main point of your essay.
- Then, include at least 3 main points in separate paragraphs in the body of your paper that support your main point, idea or opinion.
- Make sure you use transitions as you move from one paragraph to the next. Words like however, in the meantime, on the other hand, subsequently, secondly and next are some transitional words that make it easy for the reader to follow your points.
- Your last paragraph should be a summary of what you have written and should support your opening statement in the first paragraph of your essay.
