Prepare for the Test

Free, official test preparation materials for the computer-based and paper-based GRE® tests are available to anyone who registers for the GRE tests worldwide or who visits this website. Other helpful test preparation materials (see below) are available for a modest fee. If you have a disability or health-related need and require test preparation materials in an alternate format, contact ETS Disability Services.

The following materials are appropriate for those testing before August 2011.

Free GRE® General Test Preparation Materials

Powerprep® Software: Test Preparation for the GRE® General Test — Includes two computer-based GRE General Tests, sample Analytical Writing topics, scored sample essays and reader commentary, test-taking strategies, a math review, and test tutorials. Registrants in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada are advised to download the free software to prepare for the computer-based GRE General Test. Registrants who do not have Internet access and would like a copy of the Powerprep CD mailed to them should contact the GRE program.

The free software is sent to test takers outside the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada who register to test more than two weeks in advance of their test date. Test takers who register less than two weeks in advance of their test date are advised to download the software.

GRE® General Test Practice Book — Contains one full-length paper-based GRE General Test, test-taking strategies, sample Verbal and Quantitative questions with explanations, sample Analytical Writing topics and scored sample essays and reader commentary. It is sent to individuals who register for the paper-based GRE General Test or may be downloaded here.

Analytical Writing Issue and Argument Topics – Contains the pool of Issue and Argument topics from which your Issue and Argument tasks will be selected.

An Introduction to the Analytical Writing Section of the GRE General Test — Contains a description of the Analytical Writing section, strategies for each task, directions, scoring information, scoring guides, score level descriptions, a sample test and scored essay responses with reader commentary. "Issue" topics and "Argument" topics are available for review.

Preparing for the Verbal and Quantitative Sections of the GRE General Test — Contains sample questions with explanations.

Math Review — Contains information on the mathematical skills and concepts likely to be tested on the GRE General Test.

GRE® Priced Test Preparation Materials

Practicing to Take the GRE General Test, 10th Edition (US$21 plus shipping) — Contains review questions from the Verbal and Quantitative sections of seven actual GRE tests, test-taking strategies for the Analytical Writing section, sample essay responses with reader commentary and more.

ScoreItNow!™ Online Writing Practice (US$13 for two essay submissions) — Assists GRE test takers in preparing for the Analytical Writing section of the GRE General Test. Users can compose and submit essay responses online for scoring, receive immediate scores on their responses to GRE Analytical Writing tasks, review sample responses and general suggestions for improving their essay-writing skills and more.
