Judging Teachers Based on Student Test Scores Topic of ETS's 14th Angoff Memorial Lecture

As debate continues over approaches to best measure teacher effectiveness based in part on student test scores, ETS's 14th Angoff Memorial Lecture will address this topic. The event will be held on March 22 at the National Press Club, 529 14th St. NW, 13th Floor, from 2–3:30 p.m.
The lecture is expected to draw hundreds of educators, policymakers, legislators and researchers, and features Edward H. Haertel, Jacks Family Professor of Education, Emeritus, at Stanford University. Haertel has conducted research on value-added estimates calculated from patterns of students’ test scores over time using complex statistical models.
"These models provide scores for teachers intended to tell how well each did in raising students’ achievement — but they also raise questions," says Haertel. "Specifically, we need to determine the reliability and validity of teacher value-added scores; whether they measure what they purport to measure and are free from bias and distortion; and how strongly they relate to other indicators reflecting broader notions of teacher quality or effectiveness."
A reception will be held immediately following the lecture.
