ETS Research Scientist Ou Lydia Liu Receives NCME's 2011 Jason Millman Promising Measurement Scholar Award

Ou Lydia Liu, a research scientist at Educational Testing Service, received the 2011 Jason Millman Promising Measurement Scholar award at the recent annual meeting of the National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME) in New Orleans, La.

In announcing the NCME award, the committee said that Liu's "extensive and impressive independent research for someone at such an early stage of her career" made her deserving of the honor.

Since coming to ETS in 2006, Liu has been the lead author of more than 20 peer-reviewed publications on topics related to educational measurement. Her scholarly works, which appear both in ETS-published reports and in independently published academic journals, integrate complex, technical concepts in measurement with practical educational needs. Examples include Liu's research on assessments designed to measure higher education learning outcomes and her work to advance the field of science education and assessment.

"Lydia has contributed to the ETS mission from the beginning of her time here," says Ida Lawrence, Senior Vice President of the ETS Research & Development division, where Liu works. "Her research adds real value to our efforts to address pressing needs in the field of educational measurement."

Liu expressed her gratitude for the award and credited the collaborative environment of the ETS research community for helping to make the achievement possible.

"I am truly honored to receive this award from NCME," Liu says. "Since joining ETS, I have been fortunate to have the opportunities to conduct diverse research in higher education and science assessment. This award is a reflection of the great teamwork with both my colleagues at ETS and many collaborators outside of the organization."

NCME has given the Jason Millman Promising Measurement Scholar Award since 2003 to honor the lifetime work of the late Cornell University education professor and standardized testing expert, who died in 1998.
