Princeton, N.J. (April 14, 2011) —
Educational Testing Service (ETS) and AmEnglish.com® have signed an agreement to develop and market a new iPhone app, Idioms in English, part of the English Skills Series from ETS, maker of the TOEFL® and TOEIC® tests.
Idioms in English — App available for the iPhone®, iPod Touch®, and the iPad® devices — is designed to improve vocabulary, listening comprehension, and pronunciation in English for nonnative English speakers at and above the intermediate level.
"The app offers English-language learners a mobile platform from which they can practice and refine their conversational English-language skills," Michael Wilcox, ETS Director of Network Planning and Management, Global Division said.
Idioms such as "think out of the box" and "make waves" are used frequently in many forms and mediums in English communication. A lack of idiom comprehension can cause a nonnative English communicator to miss the point of a message.
Idioms in English explains more than 100 idioms through:
- Stories/dialogues using the idioms in context
- Audio featuring four different native speakers
- Multiple-choice quizzes for idiom definitions
- Definitions, examples and pronunciation practices for each idiom
- Chapter and final review games with instant scoring
- Text translations in Korean, Japanese, Chinese simplified, Chinese traditional, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese
Idioms in English is available for $4.99 (USD). For more information visit the Apple App Store.
"We are delighted to have our app in the Apple iTunes store," said Kathy L. Hans, Founder of AmEnglish.com. "This streamlined, mobile version of Idioms in English makes it convenient and fun to learn English on the go."
