Princeton, NJ (January 10, 2011) —
Educational Testing Service (ETS) has purchased Computerized Assessments and Learning (CAL), LLC, an industry-leading computerized assessment company based in Lawrence, Kansas. CAL's adaptive testing platform provides products and services to support instructional and learning processes for K–12 education systems.
CAL provides online formative, interim and summative testing for large-scale and local assessment programs. Working with states like Alaska, Kansas, Idaho, Nebraska, South Carolina, Washington and clients such as the National Catholic Education Association, CAL provides solutions that meet or exceed federal and state testing requirements and expectations.
CAL was formed in 2005 by Dr. John Poggio, Mr. Abel Leon and Dr. Douglas Glasnapp to provide assessment systems and products developed in cooperation with the University of Kansas - Center for Educational Testing and Evaluation (CETE) to a broader audience. The company will operate as an indirect, wholly-owned subsidiary of ETS, remain in Lawrence, Kansas, and continue to fulfill its current state and association contracts.
"The acquisition of CAL underscores ETS's continued commitment to be a full-service leader in state-of-the-art assessments for the K–12 market," says Stephen Lazer, Vice President of Student and Teacher Assessment at ETS. "We look forward to working closely with the team at CAL to help provide their valuable assessment and learning products and adaptive testing platform to additional large-scale and local assessment programs."
"We are very pleased to become part of Educational Testing Service's family of assessment and learning tools," says Poggio. "Since its inception, CAL has demonstrated its capacity to independently deliver valid, useful, and cost-effective online testing solutions, and by joining ETS we expect that capacity to grow."
During the past six years, CAL has created and refined the most up-to-date computerized assessment platform available in the world. In 2008 alone, the CAL online assessment system reliably delivered almost five million computer-based tests without delays or interruptions in service.
