Seoul, Korea (July 8, 2013) —
For the fifth consecutive year, Educational Testing Service (ETS) awarded TOEFL® Scholarships to high-performing students from Korea. The scholarship program recognizes TOEFL test takers in Korea who excel academically and demonstrate well-rounded qualities such as participation in extracurricular activities, including community service.
Twenty-four students each received US$3,000 to further their undergraduate or graduate studies for the 2013 academic school year. The scholarships can be used at any of the more than 8,500 institutions around the world that accept TOEFL test scores.
Eighteen of the students will pursue undergraduate studies and six will pursue postgraduate studies. Winners represented numerous regions in Korea including Daejeon, Goyang-si, Gwacheon, Gwangju, Gwangmyeong-si, Jeonju, Koyang, Kyeonggido, Seongnam, Seoul, Suwonsi and Tongyeong-si.
"It is my privilege to award the recipients of the 2013 TOEFL Scholarship Program in Korea," commented Paul Lee, ETS Country Manager for Korea. "The scholarship program is an integral part of ETS's work in advancing equity and excellence in education. ETS is committed to serving the needs of Korean students as they prepare for the global marketplace."
Selected from a competitive pool of applications, each applicant was evaluated based on his or her English-communication skills, academic record, leadership skills and extracurricular activities. Since the inception of the scholarship programs, ETS has awarded US$560,000 to Korean TOEFL and TOEIC ® test takers to further support undergraduate or graduate studies.
The ETS Scholarship & Recognition Program group, which annually administers millions of dollars in new and renewable awards in the United States and abroad, was involved in the coordination of the TOEFL Scholarship Program in Korea.
