Princeton, N.J. (September 14, 2011) —
The officials of Kharkov, Ukraine, one of the EURO 2012 host cities, chose the TOEIC® test as part of its comprehensive volunteer recruitment strategy.
At a September 6 press conference, Kharkov officials and ETS Global BV signed a Memorandum of Understanding indicating that the Kharkov's EURO 2012 organizing committee will use ETS's TOEIC program — customized specifically for EURO 2012 — to test the ability of tournament volunteers to communicate in the English language.
Dr. Zoubir Yazid, Managing Director of ETS Global said, "English is the language of business communication, and English-language proficiency is critical to hosting a successful event. Demonstrating English-language proficiency is proof of Ukraine's commitment to making visitors and fans feel welcome."
In addition, fair and valid research-based assessments built on global education standards will open more doors to the Ukraine and help to show the country's desire to join the European Union.
The TOEIC assessments offer a competitive advantage, explained Dr. Yazid. ETS offers product options to match organizations' requirements for workforce readiness and provides test takers with an internationally recognized credential to distinguish them from other job applicants.
Kharkov's use of TOEIC for EURO 2012 is the latest in a string of sports-related applications for the brand. Last fall, in preparation for the 2013 Confederations Cup, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the 2016 Summer Olympics, Minas Gerais officials in Brazil identified the TOEIC test as the state's English-language assessment tool. Minas Gerais will use the TOEIC test to select volunteers for multiple international sporting events to be hosted across the state.
