Beijing, China (October 26, 2010) —
With the success of last year's TOEIC® Scholarship Program in China, Educational Testing Service (ETS) announced today that the 2011 TOEIC Scholarship Program has been expanded to reach even more students. This year, ETS will offer two scholarship programs that recognize academic excellence by Chinese students, the TOEIC scholarship program being offered to university students and a new TOEIC Bridge™ scholarship program that will be offered to vocational college students. By offering the new TOEIC Bridge scholarships, the expanded program will allow ETS to provide support to students enrolled in vocational colleges, as well as repeat the offering to China’s university students.
ETS, the creator of the TOEIC tests, will honor 80 high-performing Chinese students by awarding a total RMB480,000 for academic study in 2011. Scholarship winners will be publicly announced in June 2011.
"Having the ability to communicate well in English assists Chinese students in achieving their personal goals, as well as providing a strong foundation for meeting success in the global market," commented Dr. Walt MacDonald, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at ETS. "We are excited to expand our scholarship program this year to recognize the achievements of Chinese students from diverse fields of study. These scholarship programs stem from our ongoing mission to promote equity and excellence in education, and are a special opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to helping advance English language learning in China."
As part of that commitment, 40 TOEIC Scholarships of RMB8,000 each will be awarded to students seeking a bachelor's degree at a university in China. To be eligible for a TOEIC Scholarship, applicants must currently be living in China and be a Chinese citizen; possess a valid TOEIC Listening & Reading test score and hold a grade point average of 80 or higher on a 100-point scale. Completed applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2011. Detailed information regarding the ETS TOEIC Scholarship Program, including application materials, is available at www.ets.org/toeic/scholarships.
New this year, ETS will award 40 TOEIC Bridge Scholarships of RMB4,000 to students seeking a degree at a vocational college in China. To be eligible for a TOEIC Bridge Scholarship, applicants must currently be living in China and be a Chinese citizen; possess a valid TOEIC Bridge test score of 120 or higher, and hold a grade point average of 80 or higher on a 100-point scale. With more than five million tests administered each year, the TOEIC tests are the global standard for assessing workplace English language communication skills for companies, institutions and government agencies around the world. The TOEIC tests are currently used by more than 10,000 organizations in 120 countries.
The ETS Scholarship and Recognition Programs (SRP) group, which annually administers millions of dollars in new and renewable awards in countries around the world, has been involved in the coordination of the ETS TOEIC Scholarship Program in China. In addition to program consultation, SRP developed application materials and guidelines for the review of the applications.
