Free Test Preparation Material Now Available Online for the GRE® revised General Test

Educational Testing Service (ETS) today unveiled free test preparation material for the GRE® revised General Test, which will launch in August 2011. Because the GRE revised General Test represents the largest change to the test in the GRE program's 60-year history and includes many test-taker friendly enhancements, it continues to capture the interest of potential graduate and business school students worldwide.

Today's announcement about free test preparation material comes shortly after the widely publicized 50 percent discount for students who take the GRE revised General Test between August 1 and September 30, 2011.

Students considering taking the GRE revised General Test will get an opportunity to practice answering the new question types and try out some of the new computer-based functionality with the free material available on the GRE website.

The free test preparation material available online includes the following:

  • Sample questions for all Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing sections of the test.
  • GRE POWERPREP® II Software, which is downloadable and gives students a simulated test-taking experience of the computer-based GRE revised General Test. The software provides a timed test that demonstrates the new design features, including allowing test takers to move back and forth and changing answers within a section, as well as a new on-screen calculator.
  • The Practice Book for the Paper-based GRE® revised General Test, which provides a simulated test-taking experience for individuals in areas of the world where the GRE revised General Test will be administered as a paper-based test.

To give test takers ample time to prepare at their own pace and to provide as much global access as possible, ETS is making free test preparation material available more than a year prior to the launch of the GRE revised General Test.

Payne points out that ETS will continue to provide free test preparation material for students who will be taking the current GRE General Test.

The GRE revised General Test will deliver many new test-taker friendly features when it is introduced in 2011. Some of the enhancements test takers will notice include the following:

  • Less reliance on vocabulary out of context, more emphasis on reading — and no antonyms and analogies
  • New navigation features, including the ability to edit or change answers and skip questions and go back to them later, within a section, giving students the freedom to use more of their traditional test-taking strategies
  • New types of questions in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections, many featuring real-life scenarios that reflect the kind of thinking they'll do in today's demanding graduate and business school programs
  • New question types, like filling in a number or providing more than one response when asked, so they can better demonstrate what they know
  • The introduction of an on-screen calculator for the Quantitative Reasoning section*
