Procedures and Regulations
Electronic Devices
Cell phones, BlackBerry® devices, PDAs and any other electronic or photographic devices are not permitted at the test center. If you bring such devices to the test center, you will be dismissed from the test, your registration and test fees will be forfeited and your scores will be canceled. Test center staff is not permitted to collect or store devices.
Arrival Time
Please report to the test center on time. If you arrive late, you may not be admitted to the test, and your registration and test fees will be forfeited.
On occasion, weather conditions or other circumstances beyond the test administrator's or ETS's control may require a delayed start or the rescheduling of your test appointment.
Procedures for Computer-based Tests
When you arrive, an administrator or supervisor will check you in and assign your seat. Please arrive at your test center location at least 30 minutes before your appointment.
Plan to be at the test center for up to two hours for each Praxis™ test or 4-1/2 hours for combined tests.
The following rules are in place to protect the security of the testing process. They apply to computer-based test sessions, beginning at sign-in and ending at sign-out (including breaks):
- Complete and sign the confidentiality statement provided to you at the test center. If you do not, you cannot test and your fees will NOT be refunded.
- Sign the test center log before and after the test session and any time you leave or enter the testing room.
- Use only the scratch paper given to you by the test administrator. You may not bring your own scratch paper to the test or remove scratch paper from the testing room.
- Raise your hand if you have a problem with your computer or need the administrator's help at any time during the test.
- Use the allotted 30 minutes of practice time for the tutorial and other untimed sections prior to the test. This allows you to become familiar with the computer functions and will help make your computer-based testing experience go smoothly. You may not use scratch paper during this time.
- Be aware that test takers on the testing premises are subject to videotaping, photographing, thumb printing, signature comparison and other forms of electronic ID comparison.
Procedures for Paper-based Tests
When you arrive, an administrator or supervisor will check you in and assign your seat. You should plan to arrive at 7:30 a.m. for Session 1 tests, or at 10:45 a.m. for Session 2 tests.
Plan to be at the test center for at least two hours, depending on the length of your test. For more information about test length, see Test and Service Fees.
The following additional rules are in place to protect the security of the testing process. They apply during the entire test session, beginning when you are admitted to the test center and up to the time that you leave the test center (including breaks):
- Do not bring mechanical pencils or paper of any kind into the testing room.
- Do not ask supervisors for schedule changes.
- Do not use watch alarms or time-keeping devices that make noise. You may pace yourself with your own watch, but the supervisor is the official timekeeper. You may not continue the test beyond the established time limit.
- Mark all your answers on the separate answer sheet. You may use the test book to work out your answers. However, answers recorded in the test book will not be scored.
- Return your test book and answer sheet to the test supervisor at the end of the test. These materials are the property of ETS.
- Use graphing, scientific and four-function calculators only where allowed or required. For detailed information, see Calculator Use.
- If you are taking the Art Making test, bring four color photographs or still reproductions of your own artwork, which meet the following requirements:
- Each image must be of a different work.
- Each of the images must be clear and show the complete artwork.
- At least two of the artworks represented must be in a medium or media that is not used in any of the other artworks.
- For more detailed information, see the Art Making Test at a Glance (PDF).
