About ETS Research and Development
ETS Research and Development (R&D) consists of two areas—Research and Assessment Development (AD)—under the direction of Senior Vice President Ida Lawrence. R&D has nearly 600 staff members; more than 150 have doctorates and another 160 hold advanced degrees.
Research
The Research area, also under the direction of Lawrence, supports ETS programs, products, and services. Lawrence is aided by Vice President John Mazzeo, the head of statistical analysis and psychometrics research. Research is organized into centers for:
- assessment innovations and technology transfer
- assessment design and scoring
- data analysis research
- educational survey assessments research
- global assessment
- learning and teaching research
- new constructs
- psychometric infrastructure
- statistical analysis
- statistical theory and practice
- validity research
Assessment Development
The AD area, under the direction of Vice President Stephen Lazer, provides assessment development services. Its test developers are responsible for producing more than 180 test titles for ETS clients such as the College Board®. The test titles include skills tests such as the SAT Reasoning Test™ and subject tests such as the Advanced Placement Program®. Among the programs handled by AD staff is the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) for the National Center for Education Statistics.
