Education Issues 2007
It has been approximately five years since President Bush signed into law the No Child Left Behind Act, setting the stage for dramatic and far-reaching education reform based on standards and accountability.
In enacting this landmark legislation, Congress and the president acted with both passion and pragmatism. There has been bipartisan support to make the law a reality in every classroom in America. Real progress is being made across the nation as we continue to improve teaching and learning for every child. We are on the road to fulfilling the promise of the No Child Left Behind Act, but much work remains.
Continuing in our mission to advance quality and equity in education, ETS has prepared a briefing book on education issues, Education Issues 2007 (PDF), that seeks to provide useful information to elected and appointed officials at the local, state and federal levels. It offers a balanced picture of three critical education issues:
- Accountability and the role assessments play in providing a window on school performance
- Value-added models, their capabilities and potential concerns about using them to evaluate teachers and student progress
- Annual state-level data from the U.S. Department of Education on adequate yearly progress (AYP)
ETS has been working to help America’s schools take advantage of the opportunity for education reform. We expect to do even more. We believe in the children of this great nation and their right to an excellent education. And we hope that you will find the material in these pages informative and helpful.
