Maryland: Praxis Test Requirements

Important News

  • Maryland requires a social security number (SSN) in order to process teacher certification paperwork. ETS does not require your SSN for its own purposes, but will submit it to Maryland with your test results. Failure to provide your SSN could delay processing of your certification application.

The computer-based tests (CBT) are offered by appointment through a national network of Prometric™ Testing Centers (many Prometric Testing Centers are located inside Sylvan Learning Centers) and select colleges and universities. Visit Computer-based Test Centers for the locations near you.

In place of Praxis I, Maryland will accept the following options from candidates:

  • SAT taken after 2005, combined math and critical reading scores of 1100;
  • SAT taken between 4/95 and 2005, math and verbal composite score of 1100;
  • SAT taken prior to 4/95, math and verbal score of 1000;
  • ACT composite score of 24;
  • GRE math and verbal composite score of 1000.

The first digit of the "Session/Test Code" indicates the session during which the test is offered in the 2009-10 testing year. There are no session numbers for the CBT tests, which are given by appointment, as explained in How to Register for Praxis.

You may take each Computerized PPST® once per calendar month up to six times in a 12-month period. If you violate this restriction, the scores from your retest will not be reported and your test fees will not be refunded. This applies even if you canceled your scores on a test taken previously.

NTE qualifying scores for tests taken prior to June 30, 2000 will be accepted for in-state and out-of-state teachers. For those subject matter certification areas not listed, the Praxis I is required.

All tests and test scores are subject to change without notice.

**Foreign language candidates who graduate from in- or out-of-state approved programs do not need to take the Principles of Learning and Teaching: 7-12 (PLT 7-12) pedagogy test. Those who are certified through transcript analysis must take the pedagogy test.
