Delaware: Praxis Test Requirements

The Delaware Department of Education does not require a social security number (SSN) to process teacher certification paperwork.  ETS does not require your SSN for its own purposes, but will submit it to the Delaware Department of Education with your test results. However, failure to provide your SSN could delay processing of your certification application.

Who Must Take the Praxis I®: Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST®)

All professional educators seeking initial certification in Delaware must take the PPST in either the paper-based or the computer-based format.

Test Requirements

The State Board validated the Praxis I PPST, as appropriate basic skills tests for initial certification in Delaware and established the qualifying scores shown below. The scores have an effective date of October 23, 1993.

You may take each Computerized PPST once per calendar month up to six times in a 12-month period. If you violate this restriction, the scores from your retest will not be reported and your test fees will not be refunded. This applies even if you canceled your scores on a test taken previously.

For further information about Delaware teacher licensing, visit Delaware Educator Data System.

The first digit in the Session/Test Code indicates the session during which the test is offered in the 2009-10 testing year. There are no session numbers for the CBT tests, which are given by appointment, as explained in Praxis I Overview.

Where to Take the Tests

The paper-based tests are administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS) at centers listed in the  Test Center List. Test dates are available at this website under  Test Dates .

The computer-based tests are given at Sylvan Technology Centers and at various institutional sites. Visit  Computer-based Test Centers  for a site near you.

Exemption Tests

Effective July 1, 1996 the Delaware State Board of Education approved the following Praxis Core Battery, SAT and GRE tests and scores as exemptions to Praxis I tests in reading, writing and mathematics. SAT scores earned after April 1, 1995 and presented for exemption must meet the score indicated due to a re-centering of the SAT.

The exemptions below are intended to provide an option for individuals who have previously taken other appropriate standardized tests. Consequently, exemption test scores should pre-date both application and employment. It is not the intent to require that other tests be taken in lieu of Praxis I tests.

The applicant is responsible for forwarding official exemption test scores to the Delaware Department of Education. If that is not possible, then the exemption cannot be allowed, and the applicant will need to meet the previously stated Praxis I score requirements.
