Hawaii: Praxis Test Requirements
Important News
- Beginning September 1, 2009, ETS will administer a new version of the Library Media Specialist test. This new test covers the same content as the previous test. However, scores are reported on a different scale, so requirements will vary from the previous version. All scores for the discontinued test are reportable for 10 years. Consult the table below for specific score requirements.
- Hawaii Teacher Standards Board requires a social security number (SSN) in order to process teacher certification paperwork. ETS does not require your SSN for its own purposes, but will submit it to the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board with your test results. Failure to provide your SSN could delay processing of your certification application.
- Test takers pursuing the Science 7-12 license should select one content knowledge test from the list of tests in the table below. Please note, however, that some of the test titles currently offered will be discontinued after July 31, 2010.
The following tests for the Science 7-12 license will be discontinued as of July 31, 2010. If you take any of these tests after July 31, 2010, your scores will NOT be accepted by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board.Current Tests to be Discontinued July 31, 2010 Test Code Passing Score Physics: Content Knowledge 0261 144 Biology Content Knowledge, Part 1 0231 161 Chemistry: Content Knowledge 0241 144 General Science: Content Knowledge, Part 1 0431 150 The following tests for the Science 7-12 license are effective as of September 1, 2009:

Test Requirements
The Hawaii Teacher Standards Board requires the Praxis I (PPST®) in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. In addition, all applicants are required to take the Principles of Learning and Teaching test (PLT), Early Childhood, K-6, 5-9, or 7-12, and the appropriate subject assessment(s) as listed below. Please note that in some subject areas both multiple-choice and constructed-response tests are required. If no subject assessment or specialty area test is listed, applicants are required to submit passing scores only for the PPST or PLT. Note: National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certified teachers may be exempt from all Praxis assessments pending approval of administrative rules. Visit www.htsb.org for updates.
The computer-based tests are offered by appointment through a national network of Prometric™ Testing Centers (many Prometric Testing Centers are located inside Sylvan Learning Centers) and selected institutional sites. Visit Computer-based Test Centers for the locations near you.
The first digit of the "Session/Test Code" indicates the session during which the test is offered in the 2009-10 testing year. There are no session numbers for the CBT tests, which are given by appointment, as explained in How to Register for Praxis.
You may take each Computerized PPST once per calendar month up to six times in a 12-month period. If you violate this restriction, the scores from your retest will not be reported and your test fees will not be refunded. This applies even if you canceled you scores on a test taken previously.

ETS no longer offers the CBT tests; however, the scores for the CBT tests are reportable for ten years. Hawaii allows combining the PPST/CPPST scores with CBT scores to meet passing score requirements. The options are as follows:
(a) Combining two PPST/CPPST tests with one CBT test: Meeting a composite score of 647 and meeting the minimum score of 170 on the PPST/CPPST tests and a minimum score of 300 on the CBT test.
(b) Combining one PPST/CPPST test with two CBT tests: Meeting a composite score of 778 and meeting the minimum score of 170 on the PPST/CPPST test and a minimum score of 300 on the CBT tests.
(c) Combining three CBT tests: Meeting the required passing score on each of the individual CBT tests (CBT Reading – 319, CBT Writing – 316, and CBT Mathematics 318).
(d) Combining three CBT tests: Meeting a composite score of 910 and meeting the minimum score of 300 on each of the three CBT tests.
