Advantages of the Praxis® Performance Assessment for Teachers (PPAT)
The PPAT was designed by working closely in collaboration with teacher education faculty, cooperating teachers and department of education officials to ensure that our assessment addressed the growing need to verify that teachers are ready for the classroom before they receive a license to teach.
This evidence-centered assessment features four tasks and offers performance indicators of teacher effectiveness in the classroom. By embedding teaching and clinical experiences with both summative and formative components, the PPAT offers educator programs a comprehensive picture of a teacher candidate's potential for classroom success rather than the "single snapshot" offered by other assessments.
Here are some of the unique PPAT advantages:
- Addresses all content areas and grade levels — The PPAT was designed specifically to provide the flexibility needed to accommodate all content areas and grade levels. Through the nature of the tasks and prompts, teacher candidates must demonstrate their knowledge in their chosen subject matter as well as pedagogy.
- Aligned to National Standards — The PPAT tasks are aligned with the InTASC Model Core Teaching Standards and foster an opportunity to demonstrate the application of Common Core Standards.
- Offers Formative Feedback — Teacher candidates will benefit from support every step of the way during the student teaching experience. This assessment is designed to provide the candidate with feedback from both the supervising instructor and teacher mentor that will help refine the teacher candidate's teaching.
- Includes a Professional Growth Plan — Teacher candidates work with their supervising instructors and cooperating teachers to develop a professional growth plan that shows their strengths and areas for improvement to further improve their teaching practice.
- Consistent data — The assessment provides educator programs with consistent data across all program areas and offers informative feedback.
- Includes Double Scoring — All centrally scored tasks (tasks 2–4) will be reviewed twice to ensure greater transparency and interrater reliability.
- Ongoing Feedback — Candidates gain understanding of their growth throughout the clinical experience based on quick turnaround scoring time as tasks are submitted.
- Ability to Resubmit — Candidates who do not meet the qualifying score can resubmit some or all of their summative tasks.
