Alabama State-approved Teacher Education Program Approach

For Those Applying Based on the Completion of an Alabama State-Approved Teacher Education Program at an Alabama College or University

General testing information for all applicants may be found in the Overview of Alabama Testing Requirements.

Applicants should contact the Certification Officer at the Alabama college or university where they are enrolled for additional information regarding program entry requirements and test implementation dates according to current Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) policies. Individuals who choose to test without advisement from a Certification Officer at an Alabama college or university according to current ALSDE testing policies do so at their own risk.

Traditional Class B (Bachelor's degree-level) or Alternative Class A (Master's degree-level, initial preparation) Programs

Applicants for the issuance of the Professional Educator Certificate based on the completion of a Traditional Class B or Alternative Class A Alabama State-approved Program must successfully complete the current Alabama Educator Certification Testing Program (AECTP) requirements:

  • pass the basic skills assessments required by the AECTP (unless the applicant holds a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate or Professional Leadership Certificate); and
  • pass the Praxis II® test(s) as indicated in the charts below; and
  • pass the Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) test (unless the applicant holds a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate or Professional Leadership Certificate) as indicated in the charts below:
    • The PLT will be required if the Alabama State-approved program was completed prior to Sept. 1, 2013, and the application is received in the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE on or after Jan. 1, 2014.
    • The PLT will be required if an Alabama State-approved program is completed Sept. 1, 2013, or thereafter.

Traditional Class A (Master's degree-level) or Traditional Class AA (Sixth-year level or Educational Specialist) Programs

Applicants for the issuance of the Professional Educator Certificate or Professional Leadership Certificate in an initial area and/or grade level, based on the completion of a Traditional Class A or Traditional Class AA Alabama State-approved Program, must pass the current AECTP Praxis II test(s) as indicated in the charts below.

Please Note:

Find your certification area below to determine which test(s) you need to take. To learn more about a specific test, click the test title. Once you know which tests you should be taking, find out how to register for Praxis™ tests or read the Praxis test retake policy.

Most tests are offered in both Session 1 and Session 2. Refer to the fees page for tests that are restricted to a particular session.

In general, unless it is specifically stated that a calculator is permitted or required for a particular test, calculators may not be used on any Praxis tests (see Calculator Use).

Notes:

  • In general, test codes that begin with "5" are delivered in computer format; codes that begin with "0" are delivered on paper.
  • "CDT" refers to computer-delivered tests. "PDT" refers to paper-delivered tests.

Tests Required for All Teaching Fields

Only applies to Traditional Class B or Alternative Class A State Approved-Program Completers, as indicated above. In addition refer to the Praxis II test requirements following this PLT chart.
