Alternative Baccalaureate-Level Certificate (ABC and CT ABC) Approaches

For Those Applying Based on the Alternative Baccalaureate-Level Certificate (ABC) or the Career and Technical Alternative Baccalaureate-Level Certificate (CT ABC) Approach

General testing information for all applicants may be found in the Overview of Alabama Testing Requirements.

Information regarding the ABC or CT ABC Approach may be found at Certification Forms.

Certification based on the ABC or CT ABC Approach may ONLY be requested by an employing Alabama county/city superintendent or eligible non-public school administrator. An individual should contact the school system or eligible non-public school in which employment is desired for information concerning certificate eligibility. Individuals who choose to test without advisement from an employing Alabama county/city superintendent or eligible non-public school administrator according to current ALSDE testing policies do so at their own risk. The Praxis II® test requirement for issuance of the ABC or CT ABC is based on the certification area for which the ABC or CT ABC is requested.

Applicants for the issuance of the first ABC or CT ABC must successfully complete the following current Alabama Educator Certification Testing Program (AECTP) requirements:

  • pass the required basic skills assessments of the AECTP prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the first ABC or CT ABC is to be issued (unless the applicant holds a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate or Professional Leadership Certificate); and
  • pass the Praxis II test, as indicated in the charts below, prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the first ABC or CT ABC is to be issued.

Applicants for the issuance of the third ABC or CT ABC, if the first ABC or CT ABC was valid for the 2013–2014 scholastic year or thereafter, must pass the current AECTP Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) test, as indicated in the charts below, prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the third ABC or CT ABC is to be issued. The PLT test is not required if the applicant holds a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate or Professional Leadership Certificate.

Applicants for the issuance of the Professional Educator Certificate, based on completion of the ABC or CT ABC approach, will have no additional test requirements.

Please Note:

Several career and technical education courses have been approved to provide embedded credit, substitute credit or equivalent credit in a core academic subject area(s) toward the Alabama High School Diploma. Teachers of such courses must document Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) status in the respective core academic subject area(s).

Find the certification area below to determine which test(s) is required. To learn more about a specific test, click the test title. Visit these links to find out how to register for Praxis™ tests or to read the Praxis test retake policy.

Most tests are offered in both Session 1 and Session 2. Refer to the fees page for tests that are restricted to a particular session.

In general, unless it is specifically stated that a calculator is permitted or required for a particular test, calculators may not be used on Praxis tests (see Calculator Use).

Notes:

  • In general, test codes that begin with "5" are delivered in computer format; codes that begin with "0" are delivered in paper format.
  • In the following test requirement charts, "CDT" refers to computer-delivered tests. "PDT" refers to paper-delivered tests.
