Preliminary Certificate (PRE) and Preliminary Certificate Through Exception (ADM) Approaches

Most tests are offered in both Session 1 and Session 2. Refer to the fees page for tests that are restricted to a particular session.

In general, unless it is specifically stated that a calculator is permitted or required for a particular test, calculators may not be used on Praxis tests (see Calculator Use).

Notes:

  • In general, test codes that begin with "5" are delivered in computer format; codes that begin with "0" are delivered in paper format.
  • In the following test requirement charts, "CDT" refers to computer-delivered tests. "PDT" refers to paper-delivered tests.

PRE Approach

Certification based on the PRE Approach may ONLY be requested by an employing Alabama county/city superintendent or eligible non-public school administrator. An individual should contact the school system or eligible non-public school in which employment is desired for information concerning certificate eligibility.

Individuals who choose to test without advisement from an employing Alabama county/city superintendent or eligible non-public school administrator according to current ALSDE testing policies do so at their own risk.  The Praxis II® test requirement for issuance of the PRE is based on the certification area for which the PRE is requested.

PRE in Speech or Language Impairment (SLI)

First PRE

Applicants for the issuance of the first PRE must successfully complete the current Alabama Educator Certification Testing Program (AECTP) requirements:

  • pass the required basic skills assessments of the AECTP prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the first PRE is to be issued (unless the applicant holds a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate or Professional Leadership Certificate); and
  • pass the Praxis II test, Special Education: Core Knowledge and Applications, prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the first PRE is to be issued.

Second PRE

  • If the first PRE in SLI was valid prior to the 2013–2014 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the second PRE, will have no additional Praxis II test requirements.
  • If the first PRE in SLI was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the second PRE must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE at 1-334-353-8567 to determine if current requirements of the AECTP basic skills assessments were met by the prescribed date. There are no additional Praxis II test requirements.

Third PRE

  • Applicants for the issuance of the third PRE must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE to verify eligibility.
  • If the first PRE in SLI was valid prior to the 2013–2014 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the third PRE  will have no additional Praxis II test requirements.
  • If the first PRE in SLI was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the third PRE  must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE  to determine if current requirements of the AECTP basic skills assessments were met by the prescribed date. There are no additional Praxis II test requirements.

Professional Educator Certificate

  • If the first PRE in SLI was valid prior to the 2013–2014 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the Professional Educator Certificate in SLI based on the completion of the PRE Approach will have no additional Praxis II test requirements.
  • If the first PRE in SLI was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the Professional Educator Certificate in SLI based on completion of the PRE Approach must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE  to determine if current requirements of the AECTP basic skills assessments have been met by the prescribed date. There are no additional Praxis II test requirements.

PRE in Library Media or School Counseling

First PRE

Applicants for the issuance of the first PRE must successfully complete the current Alabama Educator Certification Testing Program (AECTP) requirements:

  • pass the required basic skills assessments of the AECTP prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the first PRE is to be issued (unless the applicant holds a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate or Professional Leadership Certificate); and
  • pass the Praxis II test, as indicated in the charts below, prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the first PRE is to be issued.

Second PRE

  • If the first PRE in Library Media or School Counseling was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the second PRE must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE at 1-334-353-8567 to determine if current requirements of the AECTP have been met by the prescribed date.

Third PRE

  • Applicants for the issuance of the third PRE must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE to verify eligibility.
  • If the first PRE in Library Media or School Counseling was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the third PRE must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE to determine if current requirements of the AECTP have been met by the prescribed date.

Professional Educator Certificate

  • If the first PRE in Library Media or School Counseling was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the Professional Educator Certificate in Library Media or School Counseling based on completion of the PRE Approach must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE to determine if current requirements of the AECTP have been met by the prescribed date.

Requirements for PRE Approaches

Scores for previously offered tests will be accepted for some certifications if specific criteria are met. Please see the second table.

These tests will be accepted if they were taken and passed prior to the listed date, ETS provides a score report directly to the ALSDE, and the application for certification is received in the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE by the deadline indicated below. If there is no listed date and the test is electronically reportable by ETS, the test will be accepted regardless of when it was taken or when the application was received.

ADM Approach

Certification based on the ADM Approach may ONLY be requested by an employing Alabama county/city superintendent. A request for the ADM may only be considered for an individual who is not eligible for certification in the requested area through any other alternative, reciprocal, or traditional approach. An individual should contact the school system in which employment is desired for information concerning certificate eligibility.

Individuals who choose to test without advisement from an employing Alabama county/city superintendent according to current ALSDE testing policies do so at their own risk.  The Praxis II test requirement for issuance of the ADM is based on the certification area for which the ADM is requested.

ADM in Teaching Fields

First ADM

Applicants for the issuance of the first ADM must successfully complete the current Alabama Educator Certification Testing Program (AECTP) requirements:

  • pass the required basic skills assessments of the AECTP prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the first ADM is to be issued (unless the applicant holds a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate or Professional Leadership Certificate); and
  • pass the Praxis II test prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the first ADM is to be issued.

Second ADM

  • If the first ADM in the same teaching field is valid for the 2013–2014 scholastic year or thereafter, applicants for the issuance of the second ADM must pass the Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) test, as indicated in the charts below, prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the second ADM is to be issued. The PLT test is not required if the applicant holds a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate or Professional Leadership Certificate.
  • If the first ADM in the same teaching field was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the second ADM must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE at 1-334-353-8567 to determine if current requirements of the AECTP basic skills assessments were met by the prescribed date. There are no additional Praxis II test requirements. 

Third ADM

  • Applicants for issuance of the third ADM must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE to verify eligibility.
  • If the first ADM in the same teaching field was valid prior to the 2013–2014 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the third ADM will have no additional Praxis II test requirements.
  • If the first ADM in the same teaching field was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the third ADM must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE  to determine if current requirements of the AECTP basic skills assessments were met by the prescribed date. There are no additional Praxis II test requirements.

Professional Educator Certificate

  • If the first ADM in the same teaching field was valid prior to the 2013–2014 scholastic year, applicants for issuance of the Professional Educator Certificate in the same teaching field based on completion of the ADM Approach will have no additional Praxis II test requirements.
  • If the first ADM in the same teaching field was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for issuance of the Professional Educator Certificate in the same teaching field, based on completion of the ADM Approach, must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE to determine if current requirements of the AECTP basic skills assessments have been met by the prescribed date. There are no additional Praxis II test requirements.

ADM in Educational Administration, Instructional Leadership or School Counseling

First ADM

Applicants for the issuance of the first ADM must successfully complete the current Alabama Educator Certification Testing Program (AECTP) requirements:

  • pass the required basic skills assessments of the AECTP prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the first ADM is to be issued (unless the applicant holds a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate or Professional Leadership Certificate); and
  • pass the Praxis II test prior to September 1 of the scholastic year for which the first ADM is to be issued.

Second ADM

  • If the first ADM in Educational Administration, Instructional Leadership or School Counseling was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the second ADM must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE at 1-334-353-8567 to determine if current requirements of the AECTP have been met by the prescribed date.

Third ADM

  • Applicants for issuance of the third ADM must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE to verify eligibility.
  • If the first ADM in Educational Administration, Instructional Leadership or School Counseling was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for the issuance of the third ADM must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE to determine if current requirements of the AECTP have been met by the prescribed date.

Professional Leadership Certificate

  • If the first ADM in the same area was valid prior to the 2011–2012 scholastic year, applicants for issuance of the Professional Leadership Certificate in Educational Administration or Instructional Leadership or the Professional Educator Certificate in School Counseling based on completion of the ADM Approach must contact the Teacher Certification Section of the ALSDE to determine if current requirements of the AECTP have been met by the prescribed date.
