Alabama Highly Qualified Status

The first criterion for being deemed highly qualified is to hold at least a valid Alabama Class B Professional Educator Certificate, Alternative Baccalaureate-Level Certificate, Special Alternative Certificate, or Preliminary Certificate in the teaching field and at the grade levels for which Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) status is sought.

Please note that teachers of core academic subject areas are required to document HQT status; some teachers are not required to do so. Before registering for a test, teachers are advised to contact their employer or to contact the Teacher Education Section of the ALSDE at 1-334-242-9935 regarding the need to document HQT status and the options for doing so.

Get information about options and forms related to obtaining HQT status.

Teachers who use the Praxis II® option may wish to review information about the Additional Teaching Field / Certification Based on Test (CBT) Approach. If HQT status is sought outside of the teaching field and grade levels listed on the valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate, the CBT approach may also be utilized to add most teaching fields, grade levels, and HQT status.

Several career and technical education courses have been approved to provide embedded credit, substitute credit, or equivalent credit in a core academic subject area(s) toward the Alabama High School Diploma. Teachers of such courses must document HQT status in the respective core academic subject area(s).

Please note:

The chart below shows the Praxis II tests that may be used to document HQT status.

Previously accepted Praxis II test(s), which may possibly be accepted to meet current test requirements if specific conditions are met, may be found at Previously Accepted Praxis II Tests.
