Alabama Certificate Reciprocity and/or Certificate and Experience Reciprocity (Out-of-State) Approaches

General testing information for all applicants may be found in the Overview of Alabama Testing Requirements.

Visit the Educator Certification Section for information regarding this certification approach and additional options for meeting the Alabama Educator Certification Assessment Program (AECAP) requirements.

Important: TEST CHANGES and SCORE INCREASES are effective for tests taken and applications received in the Educator Certification Section of the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) on or after September 1, 2018. The score earned on the date a test was taken MAY or MAY NOT be deemed as "passing" when the test taker's application is received in the Educator Certification Section of the ALSDE. Information can be viewed in the Educator Assessment Policies.

Alabama offers three options to meet the testing requirement through certificate reciprocity and/or certificate and experience reciprocity. Individuals applying through this approach must successfully complete the current AECAP Praxis® Subject Assessments (content tests) requirements as indicated in the charts, below. In lieu of passing a Praxis Subject Assessment, individuals may choose another option, as listed below, for meeting the AECAP requirements.

OPTION ONE

Verify a content knowledge test was passed for issuance the valid professional educator certificate being presented for certificate reciprocity.

The individual must have Supplement TST completed by the certificate issuing authority to verify this option.

OPTION TWO

Verify a professional educator certificate in another state and three full years of full-time professional educational work experience, in that state, within 10 years prior to applying for Alabama certification. The experience must also have been full-time, in the same area of certification on the certificate, and in the area for which Alabama certification is being sought.

The individual must have Supplement EXP completed by the employer to verify this option.

Options one and two not allowed for area(s) of Alabama certification offered through completion of requirements of the Certificate Reciprocity for In-Field, Supplemental, Endorsement or Add-On Areas Approach.

OPTION THREE

Pass the current Praxis Subject Assessments (content tests) as indicated in the charts below.
