Maryland Test Requirements
Find your licensure area below to determine which test you need to take and see the minimum qualifying score. To learn more about a specific test, click the test title. Once you know your test(s), find out how to register for Praxis™ tests and read the Praxis test retake policy.
Most tests are offered in both Session 1 and Session 2. Refer to the fees page for tests that are restricted to a particular session.
In general, unless it is specifically stated that a calculator is permitted or required for a particular test, calculators may not be used on any Praxis tests (see Calculator Use).
NTE qualifying scores as of January 1, 2011, are no longer accepted unless accompanied by a valid, professional out-of-state certificate. For those subject matter certification areas not listed, the Praxis I® test is required.
Notes:
- In general, test codes that begin with "5" or "6" are delivered in computer format; codes that begin with "0" or "1" are delivered on paper.
- "CDT" refers to computer-delivered tests. "PDT" refers to paper-delivered tests.
Tests Required for All Licensure Areas
All beginning teachers must present qualifying scores on Praxis I® Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST®) or meet the SAT Reasoning Test, ACT test or GRE® General Test requirements.
If you wish to take all three computer-delivered Praxis I exams (5710, 5720, 5730) at the same time, select Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Test: Combined Test (5750) when registering. Scores will be reported by individual test (5710, 5720, 5730).
In place of the Praxis I (PPST), Maryland will accept the following options from candidates:
- The College Board's SAT Reasoning Test™ taken after 2005: combined math and critical reading score of 1100
- The SAT Reasoning Test taken between April 1995 and January 2005: combined math and verbal score of 1100
- The SAT Reasoning Test taken prior to April 1995: math and verbal (critical reading) score of 1000
- The ACT® composite score of 24 (ACT composite score is the average of the tests)
- The GRE® revised General Test: composite of the combined verbal and quantitative score of 297. Candidates who took the GRE® test prior to September 2011 will use the old composite score of 1000.
