Pennsylvania Highly Qualified Status

To become highly qualified (HQ), you must:

• Hold at least a bachelor's degree
• Hold a valid Pennsylvania teaching certificate (Instructional I, Instructional II, or Intern certificate but not an emergency permit)
• Demonstrate subject matter competency for the core content area you teach

In Pennsylvania, the core content areas for highly qualified status include:

• English
• Reading/Language Arts
• Mathematics
• Sciences
• Foreign Languages
• Music and Art
• Social Studies

  • Geography
  • Civics
  • Government
