About the Praxis® Assessment of Signed Communication – American Sign Language
The Praxis® Assessment of Signed Communication – American Sign Language (ASC–ASL) is for candidates who plan to teach ASL as a language other than English or for candidates who plan to teach deaf or hard-of-hearing students. The test assesses proficiency in American Sign Language exclusively.
The Praxis ASC–ASL test is designed to assess your sign communication ability. The test will be delivered in an interview format. An experienced interviewer conducts a 20-minute, one-on-one conversational interview with a test taker. The interview is videotaped, and the videotape is viewed by scorers who rate the test taker's expressive and receptive sign communication proficiency.
- During the testing session, you will be videotaped as you respond to signed questions that allow you to demonstrate your proficiency in American Sign Language.
- Your signed communication proficiency will be measured against an established standard of competence.
- You will not be rated based on the content of your responses, but rather on how well you are able to communicate your ideas and understand the interviewer.
The Praxis ASC–ASL test may be taken at any time during your academic career after you have decided to seek certification as a teacher of deaf or hard-of-hearing students, or as a teacher of ASL as a foreign language.
