Vermont Test Requirements

Find your licensure area below to determine which test you need to take and to see the minimum qualifying score. To learn more about a specific test, click the test title. Once you know your test(s), find out how to register for the Praxis® tests and read the Praxis test retake policy.

In general, unless it is specifically stated that a calculator is permitted or required for a particular test, calculators may not be used on any Praxis tests (see Calculator Use).

If you test in Vermont, your score report will be sent automatically to the Vermont Agency of Education. If you test outside of Vermont, select the Vermont Agency of Education (state code 8410) as a score recipient when you register or on an additional score report request.

Exemption from taking Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) and Praxis II® tests

  • candidates who qualify for a Level II license and who have at least three years employment experience within the past seven years as a licensed educator in the endorsement area being sought
  • candidates who otherwise qualify for licensure or endorsement and who have achieved National Board Certification in the comparable endorsement area

Tests Required for All Licensure Areas

All candidates who are seeking initial licensure in Vermont and are not exempt are required to meet passing scores established by the Vermont Standards Board of Professional Educators (VSBPE) on all three Core tests.

If you wish to take all three computer-delivered Core exams (5712, 5722, 5732) at the same time, select Core Academic Skills for Educators: Combined Test (5751) when registering. Scores will be reported by individual test (5712, 5722, 5732).

Tests Required for Specific Licensure Areas

Elementary Education

If you have not completed the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5031) test, you have through August 31, 2015 to pass all four subtests. Scores will be accepted by the Vermont Agency of Education provided the approved passing scores are met by that date. Passing scores for each subtest are:

  • Reading and Language Arts Subtest (5032): 165
  • Mathematics Subtest (5033): 164
  • Social Studies Subtest (5034): 155
  • Science Subtest (5035): 159

Please note: You cannot take a combination of 5031 and 5001 subtests. You must pass all four subtests from the 5031 version or all four subtests from the 5001 version.

* To pass the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects test you must receive a passing score on each subtest. If you wish to take all four subtests (5002, 5003, 5004, 5005) at the same time, select Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5001) when registering. If you wish to take or retake an individual subtest, you may register to take just that subtest.
