Mia Smith-Bynum

Mia Smith-Bynum is an associate professor of family science in the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland-College Park. A clinical psychologist by training, Smith-Bynum is an expert in African American family life, parenting and adolescent mental health. She is also co-author of the widely cited Multidimensional Model of Racial Identity (MMRI).

She is currently Director of the Black Families Research Group in the University's School of Public Health. Her research has been supported by external grants from several entities, including the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Her work is published in several professional research journals in psychology and family studies.

She earned a B.A. with honors in psychology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from University of Virginia.
