The TOEFL® Programme Tours Australia

The TOEFL® team, led by ETS Vice President David Hunt, Executive Directors Shelly Punchatz and Eileen Tyson, and Associate Director Helen Cook, recently embarked on a comprehensive tour through Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. This tour aimed to raise awareness of the decision made by Australia's Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) to approve the use of TOEFL test scores for student visa requirements.

The tour featured six receptions for key stakeholders — including senior university officials — to develop a greater understanding of the TOEFL test, and to outline the various ways ETS has begun to promote Australia as a study destination to its test takers. The receptions also covered how acceptance of the TOEFL test will help institutions attract a larger and more diverse pool of applicants.

In addition, the 18-day tour included high-level meetings with directors of English-language centres, a briefing with key industry leaders, and tours of current and potential test centres to gain a greater understanding of the market.

The trip concluded with the presentation of the English Australia/ETS TOEFL Award of Innovation to Ability Education at the English Australia conference. The award showcases organisations that demonstrate original and creative problem-solving initiatives in response to the challenges faced within Australia's government-regulated English language learning sector. The conference also provided the opportunity for TOEFL presentations by Helen Cook and Eileen Tyson, as well as those provided by assessment specialists Pamela Mollaun and Jakub Novák.
