2011 — Highlights from the Year
2011 proved to be a successful year for the TOEFL® programme. Some of the recent accomplishments include another record-breaking year, UK and Australia student visa acceptance, the celebration of our 30th anniversary in China and our improved customer experience.
The TOEFL programme is celebrating another record-breaking year. Over the past several years, TOEFL test volumes have continued to grow. The greatest rise was among test takers in China, U.S. and Japan. Significant increases were also seen in France, Germany, Indonesia and Turkey.
In April, the UK Border Agency announced the reaccreditation of the TOEFL test as secure UK Border Agency-approved English-language tests. Shortly after in May, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) announced that TOEFL test scores can be used for all student visas starting November 1.
Congratulations to the TOEFL test on 30 successful years in China! The TOEFL test has been in China longer than any other English-language proficiency test. This great accomplishment was celebrated with a half-day symposium. The symposium — English Language Learning: A Key Component for China's Global Competitiveness — focused on discussing the role of English as a tool for global competitiveness. The event was co-organized by the National Education Examinations Authority of the Ministry of Education and supported by the U.S. Embassy.
The TOEFL Programme improved customer experience with new resources that make getting ready for the test even easier. These resources include the TOEFL website now available in six languages: English, Simplified Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean and Spanish, the TOEFL video library, the TOEFL Journey™ programme, local resource centres and in-language customer support centres. The programme also decreased the maximum number of reading passages from five to four.
