TOEFL® Test Makes Impact on China
A recent Beijing Review article looks at the TOEFL® test's influence on Chinese students who dreamed of studying abroad. For the past thirty years, the TOEFL test has played a major role in influencing Chinese test takers to study abroad. When the TOEFL test was first introduced in China, most test takers had government support or were visiting scholars. Now the market consists mainly of self-funded students looking to study overseas to gain a competitive edge in the job market. By providing fair and reliable scores, the TOEFL test is able to help make students' dreams of studying abroad come true.
"TOEFL changed my life, as well as the lives of numerous Chinese students," said Yu Minhong, Board Chairman and President of New Oriental, the largest provider of private educational services in China. "I wanted to go abroad for further study so I took the TOEFL test. Although I scored well, I couldn't afford the trip because I couldn't get a scholarship. Then, I founded New Oriental, with the original purpose of teaching people how to prepare for the TOEFL test."
Recognized by more than 8,500 institutions in more than 130 countries, the TOEFL test is the most widely accepted English-language assessment in the world and available at more than 200 testing sites across China. Check out the TOEFL Scholarship program for other ways TOEFL supports Chinese students' ambitions to study abroad.
