ETS Global and U.S. Embassy Collaborate on Workshops Across Turkey
As part of the Academic English Workshops initiative established by the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, ETS Global (TOEFL) representatives were invited to hold a series of Propell Workshops for the TOEFL iBT® Test. The English-language workshops took place at the end of January (19–31) at four host universities in Istanbul, Antalya, Ankara and Izmir, bringing nine Turkish public universities together. The European Propell trainers, Tülay Imre, Joanna Wrzesinska and Franziska Ruehl, held four full-day Propell workshops, reaching over 150 English-language teachers across the country.
This initiative aims to assist English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Turkey in preparing students who have been awarded scholarships sponsored by YOK (Higher Education Council) and MEB (Ministry of Education) to study abroad, mainly in the United States and the United Kingdom. These students will have to take either the TOEFL test or another English-language proficiency test prior to their departure, so preparation is the key to their success. The U.S. Embassy's Academic English Workshops initiative aims to help these students by providing assistance to EFL teachers across Turkey.
"Since Turkey remains an important country for our outreach, this kind of collaboration really helps foster United States-Turkey relations and educates teachers locally about the benefits of the TOEFL iBT test'' commented Maria Victoria Calabrese, Academic & Government Relations Director at ETS Global. Having been involved in all four Propell workshops, Turkish TOEFL representative Tülay Imre has found the initiative to be, "A great success bringing teachers closer to the TOEFL iBT test by giving them the details they are interested in, in an interactive, informative way''.
