Princeton, N.J. (February 14, 2012) —

Educational Testing Service (ETS) announced a 19 percent increase in the number of Chinese TOEFL iBT® test takers for 2011 from the prior year, representing the largest number of Chinese TOEFL® test takers in history.

The number of institutions around the world accepting TOEFL scores from Chinese students now exceeds over 8,500 worldwide in more than 130 countries. The TOEFL test continues to be the most widely accepted English-language assessment used for admissions purposes internationally, with significantly more institutions recognizing the TOEFL test than any other English-language assessment.

"More and more Chinese students interested in pursuing education opportunities abroad are taking the TOEFL test," commented David Hunt, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of ETS's Global Division. "Having to take only one assessment to satisfy the English requirement for admissions purposes is very appealing to students. The fact that the TOEFL test is accepted at nearly every institution in Australia, the U.K., Canada and the United States resonates with students."

The Australia Department of Immigration and Citizenship's (DIAC) acceptance of the TOEFL test in 2011 to demonstrate English proficiency for student visas breaks the monopoly that IELTS® once held, providing Chinese students a choice in English-language assessments for study in Australia. The decision by DIAC, as well as the United Kingdom Border Agency's acceptance of the TOEFL test for visa purposes, will likely increase the number of Chinese individuals taking the TOEFL test in 2012.

As the popularity of the TOEFL test continues to increase at significant rates, additional testing administrations and testing locations will be added. Testing administrations for February 17 and 24 were recently added to the TOEFL testing schedule. ETS currently has over 200 TOEFL testing sites throughout China and plans for additional testing capacities are underway in 2012.

To assist the skyrocketing number of Chinese test takers, ETS has developed new resources including:
