Record Number of 2009 TOEFL® Test Takers in China

Increase of Chinese TOEFL Test Takers Exceeds 30 Percent from Previous Year

Educational Testing Service (ETS), the creator of the TOEFL® test, reported today that the number of 2009 Chinese TOEFL test takers surpassed the previous year by an overwhelming 30 percent, representing the largest number of Chinese TOEFL test takers for a one-year period in the history of the test.

To date, more than 24 million students globally have taken the TOEFL test to demonstrate their English proficiency to study abroad in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and 130 other countries. The TOEFL test is the most widely accepted English-language assessment worldwide, including acceptance at the top 100 U.S. institutions referenced in U.S. News and World Report's America's Best Colleges 2010.

"We have seen substantial increases in the number of Chinese students taking the TOEFL test," said Enghan Tan, China Country Manager for ETS Global. "English is the preferred global language of choice and a critical tool for Chinese students in the international marketplace. To meet the growing numbers of Chinese students interested in learning English, two additional TOEFL testing sites in Beijing have been added this year to the more than 170 sites across China. In addition, online score reports are now available for Chinese students within two weeks, making the testing process more efficient and user-friendly.
