Accommodations for Test Takers with Disabilities and Health-related Needs

The following are some of the accommodations available for the TOEFL® PBT test, which is delivered in a paper-based format. They are available to test takers in all areas and will be provided to those who meet ETS disability requirements. Test takers who require other accommodations can request them as part of the registration and accommodations approval process. All accommodations must be approved by ETS before the test can be scheduled.

Note: Test takers who have health-related needs requiring them to bring equipment, beverages or snacks into the testing room or to take extra or extended breaks need to follow the accommodations request procedures described in the Bulletin Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs.

Technical Accommodations

  • Sign language interpreter for spoken directions only

Adaptive Accommodations

  • Audiocassette version of the test
  • Reader’s script version of the test
  • Braille test (in contracted or uncontracted Braille)
  • Braille test with reader’s script
  • Large print version of the test
  • Listening section omitted
  • Extended testing time
  • Additional rest breaks
  • Large-print answer sheet
  • Printed copy of spoken directions

Note: The TOEFL PBT test and TOEFL iBT test have different test sections.

  • TOEFL PBT test sections include: Reading, Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and the TWE® writing test.
  • TOEFL iBT test sections include: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.

Before You Register for the TOEFL PBT Test

  • Test takers who need accommodations for a disability or health-related need cannot register online.
  • After you decide which accommodations you are requesting, send your information to ETS Disability Services.
  • Check the registration deadline in the appropriate Bulletin.
  • In the Registration Bulletin, you will find the registration form. Fill it out and include your check or credit card payment.
  • In the Registration Bulletin Supplement, you will need to complete three documents and include them with your paperwork:
    • Fill out the Applicant Information form (Part 1) on pages 12–13 and sign the Verification Statement.
    • Fill out the Testing Accommodations Request (Part 2) on pages 14–15.
    • Submit only one of these: the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) (Part 3) on pages 16–19 (or) Disability Documentation on page 8.

How to Submit Your Request to Register for the TOEFL PBT Test

Make sure you include all the necessary paperwork and mail it to:

  • You will receive a confirmation letter within six weeks if your request is approved. Do not call to schedule a test until you receive your approval.
  • When you call to schedule your test, you will need the voucher number and information in your confirmation letter from ETS.
