Accommodations for Test Takers with Disabilities and Health-related Needs

The following accommodations for taking the TOEFL® PBT Test, delivered in a paper-based format, are available to test takers in all areas and will be provided to those who meet ETS disability requirements.

Note: Test takers who have health-related needs requiring them to bring equipment, beverages or snacks into the testing room or to take extra or extended breaks need to follow the accommodations request procedures described in the Bulletin Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs.

Note: The TOEFL PBT test and TOEFL iBT test have different test sections.

  • TOEFL PBT test sections include: Reading, Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and the TWE® writing test.
  • TOEFL iBT test sections include: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.

Before You Register for the TOEFL PBT Test

  • Test takers who need accommodations for a disability or health-related need cannot register online or request standby registration.
  • After you decide which accommodations you are requesting, send your information to ETS Disability Services.
  • Check the registration deadline in the appropriate Test Bulletin.
  • In the Test Registration Bulletin, you will find the registration form. Fill it out and include your check or credit card payment.
  • In the Test Registration Bulletin Supplement, you will need to complete three documents and include them with your paperwork:
    • Fill out the Applicant Information form (Part 1) on pages 9–10 and sign the Verification Statement.
    • Fill out the Testing Accommodations Request (Part 2) on page 11.
    • Submit only one of these: the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) (Part 3) on pages 12–14 (or) Disability Documentation on page 8.

How to Submit Your Request to Register for the TOEFL PBT Test

Make sure you include all the necessary paperwork and mail it to:

  • You will receive a confirmation letter within six weeks if your request is approved. Do not call to schedule a test until you receive your approval.
  • When you call to schedule your test, you will need the voucher number and information in your confirmation letter from ETS.
