About the Test
- What is the difference between the TOEFL iBT® test and the revised TOEFL® Paper-delivered Test?
The TOEFL iBT test is delivered via the internet and is offered over 50 times per year. TOEFL paper testing is only offered in locations where testing via the internet is not available.
The revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test uses the same types of questions as the TOEFL iBT test. There is no Speaking section on the paper test due to the technological requirements of capturing spoken responses.
- What is the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test like?
- The revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test uses the same types of questions as the TOEFL iBT test.
- The test measures Reading, Listening, and Writing. Speaking is not included.
- The test length is approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes.

- What am I tested on in each section?
- Listening measures the ability to understand lectures, classroom discussions, and conversations spoken in English at the university level.
- Reading measures the ability to understand written passages from academic texts.
- Writing measures the ability to write in English to respond to questions based on reading and listening tasks, and to support an opinion.
- Are all the questions multiple choice?
All of the questions in the Listening and Reading sections are multiple choice. The Writing section consists of 2 essay questions.
- Where will the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test be available?
The revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test is offered only in locations where testing via the internet is not available. Review the list of test dates and locations.
- How often will the test be offered?
The test is offered on 4 dates during each testing year. A testing year begins on July 1 and ends on June 30 of the following year.
- How do I register to take the test?

- When will I have my admission ticket?
If you do not receive your admission ticket by 2 weeks before your test date, contact TOEFL Services.
- How do I cancel or reschedule my registration?
Test date changes are not permitted. If you do not take the test and do not register for another date, you may request a partial refund of 50 percent of the registration fee by submitting the Refund Request Form . If you wish to take the test on another date, submit a new registration form and test fee.
Do not contact the test center before the day of the test. Staff at the test center will not be able to help you. Contact TOEFL Services if you need help.
- What must I bring on test day?
You will need:
- valid ID with your name, signature and photograph (see what to bring on test day); the name on your ID must exactly match the name you use when you register for the test
- your admission ticket
- your signed Photo File Record with a recent, recognizable photo — Note: Your Photo File Record must be completed in black lead pencil so it can be scanned when it is returned to ETS.
- 3 or 4 sharpened soft-lead (No. 2 or HB) pencils and a good eraser
- I have a disability. How will I be accommodated?
Accommodations are provided for test takers with disabilities or health-related needs who meet ETS requirements.

- Can I use TOEFL iBT materials to prepare for the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test?
Yes. TOEFL iBT test preparation materials can be used for the Reading, Listening, and Writing sections of the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test. Just remember, there is no Speaking section on the paper test.
On Test Day
- What should I bring on test day?
- Are personal belongings allowed?
You can bring only your approved identification (ID) document(s), admission ticket, Photo File Record and pencils into the testing room.
- What rules do I have to follow while at the test center?

Scores and Score Reports
- How and when do I get my scores?
Typically, score reports will be provided to you and any score recipients you selected about 5 weeks after the test date.
Allow 7–10 days after the mailing date for delivery within the continental United States, and additional time for other areas. If your scores have not been received 7 weeks after your test date, contact TOEFL Services.
Your test fee includes a test taker score report for you, and up to 4 official score reports sent from ETS directly to your selected institutions.
- How do I order additional score reports?
Print out a copy of the Additional Score Report Request Form and follow the instructions on the back of the form for completing and mailing/faxing your request and payment.

- What is the score scale?
Each of the 3 sections is scored on a scale of 0–30. There is no total score.
- Will the Writing section be scored the same way as it is for the TOEFL iBT test?
Yes, the Writing section will be scored with the same rubrics used for the TOEFL iBT test. However, because the responses are handwritten, automated scoring is not used, and all responses are scored by human raters only.
- How long will my scores be valid?
All TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years after the test date.
- How can I cancel my scores?
Complete the score cancellation section of your answer sheet on test day, or contact TOEFL Services within 1 week of your test date.
