Meet the 2011 TOEFL scholarship winners from China. Each one is an excellent student with tremendous potential both inside and outside the classroom.

Ziwei Cheng, Beijing (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in chemical and bio-molecular engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
  • Extracurricular activities: Playing the violin, traveling, reading books, chemistry study club and choir.
  • Country of study: The United States because Cheng feels it has the best research-centered colleges in the world.
  • Goal in 5-10 years: Wants to do lab research focused on organic synthesis. Believes that by developing more effective catalysts and adopting new synthetic methods, medicines of higher quality, which are more cost-effective and have reduced side effects, can be developed.

Peisong Cong, Shanghai (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's in management science and engineering from Stanford University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Drama, soccer and the student union.
  • Country of study: The United States because Cong believes that it is the most developed country in the world.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Work for a mature company to get more experience, accumulate capital and learn how to run a business. Wants to be an entrepreneur.

Xiaoxing Cui, Beijing (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's of science in public health from The Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg.
  • Extracurricular activities: Reading English novels, swimming and listening to music, doing Occupation Health Studies, providing translations for projects, Class President, Representative of Peking University, Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations, English tutor, President of Department of Publicity, Student Psychology Club of PKUHSC.
  • Country of study: The United States because Cui believes that it houses leading graduate schools in public health and encourages biomedicine research and practice in the form of generous funding from both the government and private enterprise.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Return to China and work in an academic or international institution. Wants to do research and translate new scientific discoveries into intervention strategies in order to improve the health of the working population.

Ni Dong, Tianjin (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a postgraduate degree in english education from the Teachers College, Columbia University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Student union and drama club.
  • Country of study: The United States because Dong believes that the United States will help further her academic goals and endeavors.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Seek out ways to teach English to adults who appear to be the most challenging students in language learning because of their deteriorating language learning competence. Wants to develop a personalized theory specifically in reference to that problem.

Ying Du, Beijing (US$1,500)

  • Extracurricular activities: University radio station, student union, model United Nations, debate team and Irish dancing.
  • Country of study: The United States because Du believes that it has many world-renowned graduate schools. Du also believes that attending graduate school in America will be an unforgettable and intellectually-challenging experience.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Become an education practitioner and lead meaningful changes in inter-cultural education exchange between China and other countries in the world. Wants to promote cross-cultural dialogues and youth development through international education.

Xiaoshuang Duan, Shenzhen (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's degree in financial economics from Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.
  • Extracurricular activities: Dancing, Beijing Foreign Studies, University Career and Development Association, Simulated Stock Investment Championship and Hiall Campus Club.
  • Country of study: The United Kingdom because Duan believes that it has some of the world's top universities and business schools. Duan also wants to learn about English culture while studying in the United Kingdom.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Join a Chinese state-owned enterprise as a senior risk management officer to improve risk management practices in China.

Yujie Duo, Beijing (US$5,000)

  • Pursuing a master's degree in language and literacy from Harvard Graduate School of Education.
  • Extracurricular activities: Commissioner, Academic Commission of the Student Union, Monitor, Class 3 of the English Department, Organizer, 5th Beijing Intercollegiate English Movie Dubbing Contest.
  • Country of study: The United States because Duo believes it has a fascinating culture, a democratic political system and the spirit and motivation embodied in the "American Dream".
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Be an ESL/EFL teacher and a researcher on bilingual literacy. Wants to pursue linguistics theories, curriculum: design, language acquisition and pedagogy to help enhance Chinese students' language proficiency as well as their cognitive ability.

Shiwei Fang, Beijing (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in economics and statistics from the University of Toronto.
  • Extracurricular activities: Publishing articles and poetry, doing volunteer work, and head of Innovative Research Group.
  • Country of study: Canada because Fang has completed primary school in Canada and wants to continue studying in the country.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Wants to communicate with the deaf through poems and paintings. Hopes to help those in need and open another world to them, a world filled with laughter and happiness. Wants to teach children foreign languages.

  • Pursuing a master's in financial engineering from Columbia University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Rural Healthcare Investigation, Student Research Training Program, Business Negotiation Competition, and debate team.
  • Country of study: The United States because Gu believes it offers the best education.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Become a quantitative analyst in an investment bank or a hedge fund, to master skills necessary in asset pricing, portfolio construction and risk management.

Xun Ji, Nanjing, Jiangsu (US$1,500)

  • Extracurricular activities: Any activity that contributes to promotions of disability awareness and rights.

Fanfei Kong, Nanjing, Jiangsu (US$1,500)

  • Country of study: The United States because Kong believes that the United States is known for its leading quality of higher education worldwide.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Wants to be a Chinese teacher for 2 to 3 years in the United States and then wants to focus on the early literacy learning and language acquisition for bilingual learners of Chinese origin in the United States. Eventually wants to return to China and be an English teacher.

Jiayuan Li, Hohhot, Inner Mongolia (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a juris doctorate from the University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Law.
  • Extracurricular activities: Being a translator, serving as a correspondent for the campus magazine of Communication University of China and assisting an associate professor to complete the writing of a textbook.
  • Country of study: Will be studying in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the Peoples Republic of China. Li believes that Hong Kong is a flourishing international metropolis which offers a valuable opportunity to appreciate different cultures.

Jinghong Li, Shantou (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a postgraduate degree in environmental engineering from the University of Toronto.
  • Extracurricular activities: Badminton, volunteer activities in teaching and the Special Olympics, student research training program, leader of the Sports Department in the Student Union.
  • Country of study: Canada because Li believes that it has great educational opportunities.
  • Goal in 5-10 years: Wants to pursue an industrial career in China, is considering becoming an environmental engineer. Wants to contribute to the application of novel methods in making drinking water safe.

Luxiang Li, Shanghai (US$1,500)

  • Country of study: The United States because Li visited the United States at age 16 and feels a strong personal tie to the country.

Li Lin, Guangzhou (US$1,500)

  • Goal in 5–10 years: Wants to work for a major international accounting firm for 5 years and then return to China to teach accounting. Wants to bridge the gap between the Chinese and international accounting systems.

Mengmeng Liu, Jinan (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's in management studies from the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Campus coordinator of Junior Achievement China (NGO) and head of public relations department, Student Career Development Association.
  • Country of study: The United States because Liu enjoys the American way of life and wants to pursue a master's degree in the United States.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Become an equity research analyst, providing stock recommendations and earnings estimates to institutional investors.

Yingqi Liu, Chongqing (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's in science for environmental change and management at St. John's College at the University of Oxford.
  • Extracurricular activities: Community financial education projects aiming at students in urban Chengdu under the framework of Student in Free Enterprise, model United Nations country representative and student union chairman.
  • Country of study: The United Kingdom because Liu is familiar with the English language and feels that graduate-level education will be of great value in the future.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Become a policy consultant in the environmental ministry of China. Review the scientific basis and issues of efficiency and equity for conventional command-and-control environmental governance in China. Engineer policies that engage academics, private sectors and public administration to effectively address environmental changes and promote sustainability.

Zhao Liu, Beijing (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's in science for finance and equity at The London School of Economics and Political Science.
  • Extracurricular activities: Yoga, visiting museums and galleries, student union and auto fan club.
  • Country of study: The United Kingdom because Liu likes the country.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Wants to pursue a doctoral degree at the Graduate School of the People's Bank of China and then work in government agencies for 2 to 3 years. After that, Liu wants to set up a private equity fund, which seeks to achieve effective investments and financing for its clients, as well as provide policy suggestions to serve the interest of the general public.

Mi Luo, Beijing (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a Ph.D. in economics from New York University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Swimming, watching movies, vice president of Out-Going Exchange Department and vice president of External Relations Department, Youth Elevation Association, Peking University.
  • Country of study: The United States because Luo feels that it is the best place for economics training and research.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: To work as a faculty member at an economics department of a university and also to help others better understand the world and themselves. Wants to help disadvantaged children.

Jingnan Peng, Beijing (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in literature from Yale University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Book club, making short films and work at the school's television station.
  • Country of study: The United States because Peng believes that it has a good number of world renowned colleges and it is a center of the world.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Wants to work as a scholar on humanities and part-time as an artist. Would like to master four languages and travel freely between cultures.

Zheyue Qin, Shanghai (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's in global media and communication from The University of Warwick.

  • Pursuing a master's in science in molecular genetics from the University of Toronto.
  • Extracurricular activities: Watching movies, participating in group thematic studies.
  • Country of study: Canada. It's a natural and culturally friendly country.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Plans to return to China to continue postdoctoral training. Would like a faculty position in a prestigious Chinese university. Wants to get involved in higher education and neuroscience research.

Zhe Sha, Suzhou, Jiangsu (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a postgraduate degree in statistics from the University of Oxford.
  • Extracurricular activities: Hiking, classical music, member of the IT support team at the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE).

Yining Tian, Hangzhou (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's in business and finance from the University of Maryland.
  • Extracurricular activities: Debate team, student union, student career development association, youth volunteer center and badminton.
  • Country of study: The United States because Tian believes that the United States has been instrumental in the foundation of modern finance, as well as in shaping the global capital market and a leader in analytical finance.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Be a professional risk analyst in financial planning and wealth management companies. Wants to work in a financial regulatory institution in China. Hopes to contribute to a healthy and mature capital market, thus prompting China's economy and promoting the welfare of the Chinese people.

Duo Wan, Chongqing (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a postgraduate degree in language and literacy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
  • Extracurricular activities: Student clubs including student ambassador, youth volunteer association, and student president.
  • Country of study: The United States because Wan enjoys the academic environment and the culture of the United States.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Become a language educator in China combining the field's best practices with current research and theories. Hopes to become an influential language education policymaker in the Ministry of Education and an agent of progressive change in the education system in China.

Yanyue Wang, Shenyang (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in environmental studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
  • Extracurricular activities: Volunteering, student union, drama, speech.
  • Country of study: The United States because Wang believes it has excellent academic resources.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Wants to start an environmental organization and try to solve environmental problems. Hopes to organize an internet platform for environmentalists to exchange ideas and organize activities as well as discuss ways to save the environment and form a united force against climate downturn.

Yanzi Wu, Suzhou (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Virginia.
  • Extracurricular activities: Playing the guitar, running, librarian, chief of music department, hostess and producer of school radio station, designing, creating school posters and participating in debates.
  • Country of study: The United States because Wu would like to learn about and experience the American culture.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Wants to research and study polar bears and their habitats, and find ways to deal with the tough situation faced by not only the polar bears but also humanity at large.

Peisi Xu, Beijing (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's in financial economics from Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.
  • Extracurricular activities: Social service team, public speaking club, and ambassador program.
  • Country of study: The United Kingdom because Xu believes the United Kingdom has an advanced education system and culture.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Plans to work at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) as a senior investment officer specializing in the clean-energy sector in emerging markets. Hopes to foster economic growth and technological advancement in developing countries. Ultimately, wants to return to China and make a substantial contribution to the development of the clean-energy industry.

Tian Xu, Xi'an (US$1,500)

  • Pursing a master's in linguistics from the University College of London.
  • Extracurricular activities: Guiding tourists through the Shaanxi History Museum.
  • Country of study: The United Kingdom because Xu believes it offers high quality educational resources.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Become an academic researcher and professor. Wants to make a reverse-engineering project of human wisdom a life-long career, which will provide Xu with an opportunity to conduct research and share findings with colleagues and students in a higher education institution.

Zhuofei Xu, Beijing (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a bachelor's in urban studies from Brown University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Student government, model United Nations, founder of Qunying Club.
  • Country of study: The United States because Xu believes that the United States provides an environment to get to know people from different backgrounds as well as a liberal education. Xu also feels that the United States has excellent internship programs that combine theory with practice.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Would like to start an architecture and urban planning firm, which will be devoted to designing affordable housing in developing countries and building healthy communities in cities. Hopes to cooperate with the United Nations Development and Progress Department and take part in United Nations post-disaster reconstruction missions.

Yuan Xue, Chengdu (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's in economics from Duke University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Reading, writing, listening to music, Peking University Enrollment Propaganda Committee Leader, volunteer for Peking University Center for Health Economics, and volleyball.
  • Country of study: The United States because Xue believes that the United States has an excellent higher education system.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Become a faculty member in a university. Return to China since Finance is an emerging subject there and systematically trained professors are in need. Help individual investors with their investment decisions for they are always at a disadvantage compared with institutional investors.

Han Yan, Baoding, Hebei Province (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's in mathematics from the University of Cambridge.
  • Extracurricular activities: Drawing and student union.
  • Country of study: The United Kingdom because Yan believes that there are several esteemed universities in the United Kingdom.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Wants to become an assistant professor and eventually a tenured professor in a research institution in 10 years.

Ethan Yang, Shanghai (US$5,000)

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in science from McGill University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Read and write poetry, listen to and imitate pop music, volleyball, founder of The Movie Industry Club, model united nations member, environmental club member, student council and debate team.
  • Country of study: Canada, because Yang believes that Canada can provide an excellent education at a reasonable cost.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Hopes to obtain a doctorate and pursue biomedicine. Hopes to initiate international research that involves China, America, Canada and other leading nations, which will reverse the effects of aging and find a cure for Alzheimer's, HIV, and other diseases.

Runqian Yang, Dalian (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in business from Simon Fraser University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Piano, guitar, swimming, basketball, golf, composing.
  • Country of study: Canada, because Yang believes it is a multi-cultural country which provides outstanding higher education.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Would like to start a company and build a business school within the community to help those children who cannot afford to go to business school.

Xinyan Yu, Wuhan, Hubei (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a master's in journalism from the University of Hong Kong.
  • Extracurricular activities: Swimming, yoga, academic advisor & vice president at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Model United Nations Association, reporter and copy editor at Investigation 107 and photography.
  • Country of Study: Hong Kong, China because Yu believes it provides a liberal environment and because it is an English-speaking city.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Being a professional journalist mainly based in Asia, reporting for English media. Also wants to become a convergent journalist specializing in both writing and photographing.

Youlin Yuan, Shanghai (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in philosophy, politics and economics from the Somerville College, University of Oxford.
  • Extracurricular activities: Fund raising for the nonprofit Organization of Raleigh, China, volunteer work, attending model United Nations conferences and public speaking.
  • Country of study: The United Kingdom because Yuan believes that the United Kingdom has a long industrial history, a strong humanity study tradition and for its proximity to Europe.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Serving as a journalist of conscience who has the courage and the ability to report the truth.

Hui Zeng, Beijing (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a juris doctorate in labor law from New York University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Singing, swimming, model United Nations, and moot court law competition.
  • Country of study: The United States because Zeng believes it has a more mature legal system which other countries can learn from.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Work at Zhicheng Legal Aid Center as a public interest lawyer. Wants to improve the Chinese labor law system. Also hopes to work with public interest lawyers, law school students and government schools to offer legal workshops and conferences in underprivileged communities.

Han Zhang, Hong Kong (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a Ph.D. in economics from Indiana University, Bloomington.
  • Extracurricular activities: Reading, writing, practicing Chinese calligraphy, member of the Chinese Society for hard-pen calligraphers, singing, working out.
  • Country of study: The United States because Zhang believes that the United States is a prominent destination for research in economics, and provides the best training and education to future economists.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Become an academic economist working at a research institution. Hopes to further the development of China and save more people from poverty.

Yilin Zheng, Guangzhou (US$5,000)

  • Pursuing a master's of science in financial economics from the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.
  • Extracurricular activities: Reading, traveling, delegate for the Global View Initiative, delegate to the Miami Program and debate club.
  • Country of study: The United Kingdom because Zheng did a six-month exchange program there in 2010 and it was a rewarding experience.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Working in a higher education institution in China, teaching economy and finance and doing research. Hopes to help understand the seemingly irregular patterns in the Chinese financial market, so that policymakers in China can establish a more stable system.

Yiwen Zheng, Chengdu (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in East Asian studies from Stanford University.
  • Extracurricular activities: Participating in volunteer activities like setting up art shows, coaching juniors and setting up the oracle bones study club.
  • Country of study: The United States because with passion and perseverance Zheng's dreams can be realized in the United States.
  • Goal in 5–10 years: Teach East Asian art and culture in universities or academic organizations in cities around the world.

Xun Zhou, Wuhan (US$1,500)

  • Pursuing a post-doctorate degree in neuroscience from the University of British Columbia.
  • Extracurricular activities: Student union, summer practice, campus newspaper and Young Volunteers Association.
  • Country of study: Canada because Zhou believes that it has a peaceful, progressive society and attractive natural landscapes and is also well known for its world-class academic training and education.
