ETS Announces the Winners of its 2011 Academic Scholarships in China

TOEFL® and TOEIC® Programs Award US$150,000 to Chinese students

At a press conference this afternoon in Beijing, Educational Testing Service (ETS) Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Dr. Walt MacDonald announced the 128 ETS Scholarship winners for 2011. This is the second year ETS offers scholarship program in China.

The ETS Scholarship Program recognizes academic excellence by TOEFL®, TOEIC®, and TOEIC Bridge™ test takers from China.

Forty-eight TOEFL scholarships valued at approximately RMB534,000 (US$82,500) were awarded to students in China mainland. These included three RMB32,000 (US$5,000) scholarships and 45 RMB9,500 (US$1,500) scholarships for academic study in the United States, U.K., Canada and other countries. The 2011 awards represented an increase of more than RMB130,000 (US$20,000) in award funding over the 2010 TOEFL Scholarship Program.

In addition, ETS's 2011 TOEIC Scholarship Program honored 80 high-performing Chinese students by awarding a total RMB480,000 (US$74,000) for academic study in 2011. Forty TOEIC scholarships of RMB8,000 (US$1,200) each were awarded to students seeking a bachelor's degree at a university in China and 40 TOEIC Bridge scholarships of RMB4,000 (US$600) were awarded to students seeking a degree at a vocational college in China.

About ETS Scholarship Winners Selection Criteria

The ETS Scholarship winners are selected using various criteria that allow ETS to identify exemplary Chinese students. Criteria for winning the TOEFL Scholarship included a valid TOEFL score, strong academic record, thoughtful essay, clear and concise responses to free-response questions, and extracurricular activities. Criteria for winning the TOEIC and TOEIC Bridge Scholarships included a valid TOEIC score, strong academic record, letter of recommendation, concise responses to scholarship application questions and extracurricular activities. The TOEIC scholarship also requires an interview with the TOEIC Scholarship Committee.
