Belo Horizonte, Brazil (October 4, 2010) —
In preparation for the 2013 Confederations Cup, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the 2016 Summer Olympics, Minas Gerais officials and ETS Preferred Associate Luziana Lanna Idiomas, have completed a project identifying the TOEIC® test as the state's English-language assessment tool. Minas Gerais will use the TOEIC test to select volunteers for multiple international sporting events to be hosted across the state.
Belo Horizonte has been officially confirmed as one of 12 host cities participating in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the first to identify an English-language assessment tool to help select qualified volunteers for these types of global events.
"We are excited to provide Minas Gerais with an English-language assessment that will help select the best candidates to contribute to the success of the international events held in Brazil in coming years," said Annabelle Galera Simpson, Director of Client Management Latin America for ETS's Global Division. "Minas Gerais made an early and significant investment in preparing itself for these international events, and we look forward to further assisting each of Brazil’s participating states, as well as organizations and businesses across the country."
To help select an English-language assessment tool, Minas Gerais officials and Luziana Lanna Idiomas coordinated the TOEIC Test-BH project which had 25,000 registrants. Eligible candidates were assessed using the TOEIC and TOEIC Bridge™ tests, and 171 cities across the state participated in the "Volunteers of the State of Minas Gerais" Project. In an event last week in Belo Horizonte, ETS Preferred Associate, Luziana Lanna Idiomas, awarded these participants certificates indicating their participation in the project and their TOEIC test score. The ceremony was attended by Governor Antonio Augusto Anastasia of Minas Gerais, Mayor Márcio Lacerda of Belo Horizonte, Ricardo Trade, FIFA Director in Brazil, representatives of the World Cup Committee for Brazil and ETS as well as corporate leaders from Minas Gerais.
The TOEIC tests are ETS assessment tools that measure proficiency in everyday English language skills used in the workplace. With more than five million tests administered each year, the TOEIC tests are the standard measurement of workplace English language proficiency used by 10,000 organizations in 120 countries worldwide. By measuring all four skills — speaking, writing, listening and reading — the TOEIC tests help companies, organizations and agencies reach their business goals while helping test takers achieve their career goals.
