Hi, I'm Paul Deane. I'm a Principle Research Scientist at ETS
focusing on analyzing writing, especially developing automated ways
of measuring strengths and weaknesses in people's writing.
That's important because it helps people get feedback on how to improve.
It helps teachers know who needs what kind of help.
It helps policymakers understand whether particular ways of teaching are working.

because writing is a very important skill, and there are a lot of people who have
weaknesses in that area, especially from underserved groups.
So any way we can find to reduce those kinds of differences is important.
