Abstract

SUMMARY: Through examination of test scores, this research found that the TOEIC tests measure distinct but related skills, and that, taken together, they provide a reasonably complete picture of English-language proficiency. This finding provides additional evidence that four-skill approach to language proficiency assessment is crucial. In addition, this research also explored the potential role of receptive skills (i.e., listening and reading) in the improvement of productive skills (i.e., speaking and writing) with the result that test takers at similar levels of speaking and writing ability showed more improvement over time when they had higher reading and listening ability, highlighting the potential importance of receptive skills in developing productive skills.
