Coronavirus Update: Increased Availability and Accessibility of TOEFL® and GRE® At Home Tests

April 14, 2020

ETS is pleased to share several important updates regarding at home testing for the TOEFL iBT® test and GRE® General Test.

  • Increasing Momentum — Since introducing the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition and the GRE General Test at home in late March, more than 18,000 test takers have registered to take either test from the safety of their homes in 116 countries and territories through the end of June. More than 2,000 have already tested successfully. We currently have sufficient capacity to meet test takers' needs but continue to recommend that prospective students register as soon as possible for the best chance to test at their preferred date and time.
  • Increasing Availability — The at home tests can now also be taken on a Mac® computer if Windows® is installed and the test taker is using a Google Chrome or Firefox® browser. More details can be found under the "Equipment and Environment Checklist" on the test taker web pages accessed using the links below.
  • Increasing Accessibility — ETS is committed to serving test takers with disabilities and health-related needs by providing services and reasonable accommodations that are appropriate given the purpose of the test. These accommodations can be requested in the test taker's ETS account:

    • Extended time
    • Extra breaks
    • Screen magnification
    • Selectable colors

Many other accommodations can be requested through ETS Disability Services, provided that the test taker can supply the approved device, such as an IntelliKeys® keyboard or diabetic instruments.

  • Increasing Information-Sharing — Due to the popularity of ETS's free webinars about the at home tests (2,500+ faculty, staff and student advisors have already registered to attend), we are extending the series with 3 new sessions. The webinar includes a brief presentation followed by a Q&A session. Learn more and register.

In the meantime, please consult the following websites to find more details about security measures and answers to other questions you may have:

As a reminder, due to the mandatory closing of ETS's facilities in Princeton, N.J., paper score reports are currently not being distributed. To access scores without interruption, please sign up for ETS® Data Manager. It is a free, online service that makes it easy for institutions to access score reports and test taker photos, listen to 1-minute samples of TOEFL iBT Speaking responses, and view actual GRE Analytical Writing essay responses. Upon signing up, you can retrieve data from prior years (2 years of TOEFL scores and 6 years of GRE scores). Learn more about the ETS Data Manager.

Should you have thoughts regarding assistance that ETS can provide to you directly as we manage through this situation, please share those with me using the contact information below.

Thank you for your continued partnership, and we'll keep you updated on further developments.

Sincerely,

Eileen Tyson
