Choose Where to Take the GRE® General Test

With the addition of at home testing, you have another option to help you feel confident on test day. Take the test where you feel you will do your best — at a test center or at home. Knowing you can make the choice that works for you is one more way the GRE® General Test helps you do your best on test day.

Test at a Test Center

Test centers are now open across the globe. Find available test centers and dates.

To help protect the health and safety of test takers and staff, enhanced procedures have been implemented at test centers, including:

  • Social distancing measures
  • Masks are required during the entire test
  • Gloves may be worn
  • Enhanced cleaning of testing stations

Check with your local test center for a complete list of health and safety procedures.

Test at Home

The GRE General Test taken at home is the same test you would take at a test center, monitored online by a human proctor. The at home test offers you the:

  • Same content, format, on-screen experience and length (about 3 hours, 45 minutes)
  • Same test-taker friendly options — skip questions, go back and change answers, etc.
  • Same price and payment options, including vouchers
  • Same score scales, score report and ScoreSelect® options
  • Same test again options

Watch our GRE General Test at home video for a preview of the entire testing from home process, including:

  • equipment and environment requirements
  • registration process
  • what to expect on test day
  • after the test

"[I] got to take it from the comfort of my own home and at the time that worked best for me!"
Louis B., PolySci major
