ETS and IIE Cement Partnership to Increase Student Mobility to the U.S.

PRINCETON, N.J., USA (June 1, 2023) – ETS, the world’s largest educational assessment organization, announced today that it is cementing its partnership with the Institute of International Education^® (IIE), one of the largest international scholarship and exchange organizations worldwide. As two of the world's leading international educational organizations with a history of more than 35 years of working together to increase access to English-language training and U.S. higher education, IIE and ETS are strengthening their relationship in key areas that will promote academic mobility and grow the United States’ position as the leading destination for international talent.

“The U.S.’s position as a global education leader has never been more important as we continue to witness the transformative power of international education and the impact it has on our global economy and social good,” said Rohit Sharma, Senior Vice President of Global Higher Education and Workskills at ETS. “While our relationship with IIE is not new, we want to focus on driving global mobility, especially in making U.S. quality education available to more students worldwide.”

According to the latest IIE Open Doors Report (2022), in the 2021–2022 academic year, the total number of international students at U.S. colleges and universities increased by 4% to 948,519, with new international student enrolments increasing by 80%. However, the numbers are still not back to pre-pandemic levels, which bolsters the need to continue to position the U.S.’s unique capacity to host even more international students.

We share a longstanding commitment to providing students — from all backgrounds and world regions — with opportunities to succeed in the classroom and in the workforce,” said Jonah Kokodyniak, IIE Senior Vice President. “Today, we are redoubling these efforts and developing new and innovative ways to advance our respective missions. Central to this is the promotion of the U.S. as the leading study destination in the world.”

As part of this partnership, ETS and IIE will identify near- and longer-term opportunities to collaborate to further the global accessibility of education and expand international student mobility. These opportunities include advocating for policies that promote international educational exchange and support the United States as the world’s leading higher education destination, exploration of partnerships and business ventures in new markets, providing greater insights and resources to higher education institutions, and partnering to address the world’s growing refugee crisis.
