Princeton, NJ (November 10, 2022) – Just over a year after its global launch, the TOEFL® Essentials™ test is now accepted by more than 500 programs worldwide.

As of November 2022, programs from 29 countries are represented on ETS’s official TOEFL Essentials acceptance list, including popular study abroad destinations such as Canada, the United States and the U.K.

“We are excited for this milestone and to see the positive response our customers have shown to TOEFL Essentials to date,” said Srikant Gopal, Executive Director, TOEFL Program, ETS. “We set out to provide universities and students alike with an English-language test that boasts quality, affordability and convenience and TOEFL Essentials has delivered just that. We look forward to the year ahead and to the next 500!”

According to ETS’s most recent market research, test takers have reported positive experiences with several areas of the TOEFL Essentials test experience, including the timeframe for receiving score reports; overall length of the test; the mix of academic and general English content; the ability to receive Reading and Listening scores immediately following the test; the ease of creating an ETS account and scheduling a test; and the availability of test times, among others.

Institutions echo this positive feedback. Maggie Wolford, Director of Graduate Recruitment and Admissions at the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science, Binghamton University, appreciates the Personal Video Statement that accompanies test takers’ score reports, noting that it creates a “personal connection” to them.

On the test’s acceptance, Wolford notes, “We started accepting TOEFL Essentials because we were trying to reduce barriers. We are trying to help students where they are and allow them to choose which test option works best for them so that they can successfully apply to graduate programs.”
