ETS at AERA and NCME 2024: Advancing Educational Equity and Innovation
Earlier this month, ETS researchers attended the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the National Council on Measurement Education (NCME) 2024 Annual Meetings in Philadelphia. For decades, the AERA and NCME conferences have been critical for showcasing our thought leadership in the fields of assessment and measurement science, disseminating ETS research, developing collaborations and partnerships and learning about new research and developments in our field. This year was no exception, with our researchers presenting in over 70 sessions across the two conferences.
ETS presentations covered a wide range of topics, including boosting collaborative problem-solving in mathematics, exploring the role of AI in educational assessment, promoting competency-based education and leveraging culturally responsive teaching and assessment strategies. These discussions are crucial for addressing critical, pressing educational and societal needs. To help actively promote our presence at these conferences, participating researchers recorded short videos to introduce their work; watch the videos here.
This year's conferences marked an exciting time for ETS and provided an invaluable opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with the scientific community about our new brand, the launch of the ETS Research Institute and how our ambitious research agenda is advancing measurement science to drive human progress.
Congratulations to ETS scientists whose achievements were recognized by the AERA and NCME this year:
- Randy Bennett was honored with the AERA Award for Outstanding Contribution to Research in Cognition and Assessment, a testament to his remarkable work.
- ETS’s Jiangang Hao and Bob Mislevy, along with Alina A. von Davier (Duolingo), received the NCME Annual Award for Exceptional Achievement in Educational Measurement for co-authoring and editing the book “Computational Psychometrics: New Methodologies for a New Generation of Digital Learning and Assessment: With Examples in R and Python”.
- Mikyung Wolf, Lorraine Sova, Gerriet Janssen, Alexis Lopez, Reginald Gooch, Emilie Pooler, and Jeremy Lee received the AERA Award for Excellent Research on Inclusion and Accessibility in Educational Assessment for their paper, "Equity for multilingual learners: Leveraging formative assessment and socioculturally responsive assessment principles."
ETS’s strong support of both AERA and NCME is grounded in our common goal to enhance learning journeys for all through research and innovative assessment methods. "The themes of both conferences, 'Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities" for AERA and "Reconceptualizing Measurement Theory and Practice to Reduce Inequities" for NCME, deeply resonate with our commitment to advancing the science of measurement to empower individual learning journeys and optimize access to opportunities for all.
At ETS, we recognize that assessments—just like learning experiences—should not be one-size-fits-all. The individual is at the center of our research. We are leading the transition from standardization to adaptive personalization in assessment, creating assessment designs and measurement models to help individuals and organizations grow and succeed in the world of tomorrow. Here is to many happy returns!" said Kadriye Ercikan, VP of Research Institute at ETS.
