The TOEFL® Program Offers Professional Development Workshops for English-language Teachers in Tokyo, Kobe and Okinawa

Upcoming Propell® Workshops Offered in September and November

Tokyo, Japan (August 20, 2013) —

As the demand for highly skilled English-language professionals increases throughout Japan, ETS and CIEE will host a series of professional development workshops for teachers that offers an in-depth look at the TOEFL iBT® test, the most widely accepted English-language assessment worldwide. Designed specifically for English-language instructors, the Propell® workshops offer hands-on, innovative strategies to familiarize teachers with the TOEFL iBT test and strategies to build an engaging curriculum to effectively prepare students for the test.  

The one-day workshops are scheduled for:

  • September 22 in Tokyo at the Tokyo Yaesu Hall
    (Registration is required by September 1)
  • September 28 in Kobe at the Kobe International House
    (Registration is required by September 1)
  • November 17 in Okinawa at the Okinawaken Seinenkaikan
    (Registration is required by October 27)

The Propell workshops will provide an extensive review of the TOEFL test while offering educators a platform to discuss successes and challenges in advancing students' English-language skills. Led by an ETS-approved trainer, and based on the integrated-skills approach, the workshops will include:

  • a comprehensive overview of the TOEFL iBT test
  • a detailed review of the scoring guidelines for the Writing and Speaking sections of the TOEFL iBT test
  •  practice in scoring sample test-taker responses
  •  an engaging discussion on practical applications to guide classroom instruction

"The Propell Workshops offer a unique opportunity to learn more about each of the four sections of the TOEFL iBT test, as well as the scoring criteria for both the Speaking and Writing sections of the test from an ETS Authorized Propell Trainer," commented Jennifer Brown, Executive Director of the TOEFL Program. "Through the sessions' interactive learning environment, teachers will have the opportunity to collaborate with one another and share best practices in helping their students succeed in an English academic setting."

Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to register soon. Each conference participant will receive a workshop manual and a certificate of attendance. Lunch will be provided.
