Indiana Test Requirements

Find your certification area below to determine which test(s) you need to take. For test prep materials, click the test title. Once you know which tests you should take, schedule your test.

Unless it’s specifically stated that a calculator is permitted or required for a particular test, you can’t use a calculator on any Praxis tests (see Calculator Use).

The Indiana Department of Education has not approved qualifying test scores for all certificate areas; thus, the Praxis test is required if applicable and available.

For further information about Indiana educator certification and licensing, visit the Indiana Department of Education website.

Content areas

Many, but not all, content areas can be added to a valid existing license by testing alone. Additions do not require passage of a second pedagogy test. The addition of CTE areas also requires documented nonteaching occupational work experience.

The following content areas may not be added to a valid existing license by testing alone (requires completion of both an approved program of coursework and testing):

  • Early Childhood Generalist
  • Elementary Generalist
  • Special Education (mild intervention, intense intervention, blind and low vision, and deaf and hard of hearing)
  • Communication Disorders (requires MS in Speech Language Pathology (SLP) and SLP licensure from the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency)
  • Teachers of English Learners
  • High Ability
  • Fine Arts (instrumental and general music, vocal and general music, theater arts, and visual arts)
  • Building and District-level Superintendent Administrative stand-alone license areas
  • School Services stand-alone license areas (School Counselor, School Nurse, School Social Worker, Communication Disorders)
