Marcel Ionescu

Marcel Ionescu is a lead program manager for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in the ETS Research Institute. He received his Ph.D. in sociology from Tulane University in 2009. He also has degrees in philology (English & French) and electrical engineering from Transilvania University (Brasov, Romania).

Marcel joined ETS in 2005 as part of the College Board Program group, where he coordinated the work of Assessment Development and Statistical Analysis staff on two programs: College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) and Advanced Placement (AP). He was involved in the overhaul of the CLEP composition tests between 2007 and 2010, a process that resulted in the launch of two new tests in 2010. In 2010, he joined the English Language Learning and Assessment (ELLA) group within Research, where he helped coordinate external research grants funded through the TOEFL program (e.g., TOEFL COE grants), as well as plan and manage the work of a team of Research Assistants and Associates on a variety of research projects. Since 2018, he has been part of the NAEP Survey Questionnaire (SQ) team in the Research Institute, as a lead program manager responsible for the NAEP Mathematics and Technology and Engineering Literacy (TEL) survey questionnaires.
