Wang, Zuowei

Zuowei Wang is a senior research scientist in the ETS Research Institute. He earned his Ph.D. in education and psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 2015. His research focuses on literacy development and assessment, drawing on a wide range of methodologies, including psychometrics, longitudinal modeling, natural language processing, speech processing, eye-tracking, and large-language models, to address foundational and applied research questions. His research has identified several thresholds in literacy development, including the decoding threshold, which has been featured in news outlets such as the New York Times and EdWeek

He also led the research that enabled the commercialization of ReadBasix under an Institute of Education Sciences contract. In 2025, ReadBasix was adopted as the official reading screener for students in grades 4–12 across Minnesota’s public schools.

From 2026–2029, he is serving as the principal investigator for a Department of Education grant focused on leveraging generative artificial intelligence (AI) to support postsecondary instructors. The project helps educators create scenario-based learning and assessment modules designed to foster deeper understanding in various content areas and enhance students’ AI literacy.
